Together, let's dive into the rich whisky history of the enchanting Isle of Arran, located on Scotland's beautiful west coast.
Isle of Arran
For centuries, whisky was secretly distilled on Arran, known as "The Arran Water". In 1836, Torrylinn, then the last legal distillery on the island, closed its doors. Unfortunately, its existence was short-lived, lasting only 15 years. From then on, a lull fell over the world of whisky on Arran.
It took almost 160 years, until the year 1995, before a new legal distillery opened its doors in the north of the island: Lochranza Distillery, where the delicious Arran single malt is produced. This whisky is one of the gems in our extensive whisky range. At Lochranza, mainly non-turfed whisky is distilled, while the-turfed variety is known as Machrie Moor.
The Lagg Distillery
In 2019, the first spirit began flowing at the brand new Lagg Distillery, located in the beautiful south of the island, with breathtaking views of the nearby coastline. Only 100% tarted whisky is produced here, using a state-of-the-art distillery that is definitely worth a visit! Lagg Distillery adds a contemporary approach to the knowledge and experience gained at Arran (same owner), and this results in beautiful whiskies with a distinctive oily, spicy, sweet and smoky character, perfectly suited to the island's picturesque landscape.
The production process at Lagg
At Lagg Distillery, they source their peat from Aberdeenshire, where they use extremely dense peat. This results in a sweet, smooth peat with an aroma reminiscent of a crackling wood fire. The flavour is less pungent and contains fewer phenolic elements. The unique process in the mash tun, a semi-lautertun for those interested, is specially designed to create a "cloudy wort", bringing out the oily and powerful flavours to full effect.
At Lagg, they experiment with a relatively long fermentation time of 76 hours, resulting in a very sour wash incomparable to anything we have ever tasted. In a blind tasting, this would certainly be reminiscent of gueuze! Finally, the shape of the stills and distillation technique create an extraordinary, oily new make spirit that is of outstanding quality.
The first permanent whisky in the range: Lagg Kilmory
It is with great pleasure that we can finally present the long-awaited addition to their permanent range in 2023: Lagg Kilmory, the start of a new adventure! Kilmory is a powerful, strongly-turfed whisky (50 ppm) distilled in 2019. This whisky has been fully matured in first-fill bourbon casks and is bottled at 46% alcohol. Naturally, it is non-chill filtered, as we would expect from a whisky from the enchanting Isle of Arran.
But where does the name come from? Kilmory is a charming village located in the south of Arran, between Lagg and Kildonan.
- Nose: A seductive combination of heather smoke and subtle roasted citrus
- Mouth: An explosion of fruity notes is followed by the subtle smokiness of a crackling campfire
- Finish: long-lasting and enchanting

As a creative jack-of-all-trades in the marketing world, I also bring that imaginative flair to my drink choices. Whether on a night out, sunny vacation or social gathering with girlfriends, I'm always in my element with a refreshing cocktail in hand. Cocktails have stolen my heart because of the endless possibilities to experiment and explore. My favorite cocktail of the moment is the "Lazy Red Cheeks"! A delicious cocktail using vodka as a base. I love vodka because it mixes perfectly with non-alcoholic drinks. My favorite spirit? Rum!
