Flavour notes

The flavour comes across as firm and spice-led, with fruit playing a clear supporting role. At 58% cask strength it has real presence, while the bourbon cask adds a light touch of wood rather than taking over the profile.

Gentle sweetness, floral hints and a subtle vegetal edge sit around the heavier spicy core. The overall impression stays close to the supplied note: a weightier, spiced rum from a family-run distillery working with column distillation.

Product info about Belize 2005

Belize 2005 from 1423 Rum World Class is a molasses rum with a very focused identity. It was distilled in 2005 at Travellers Distillery in Belize and bottled in 2023 as an 18-year-old single cask, coming from a family-run distillery known here for a heavier, spiced style from column distillation.

Part of its character comes from the way it matured: first in the tropics, then further aged in Denmark, before being bottled at cask strength at 58%. The bourbon cask adds structure, but the rum is not presented as a wood-driven bottling; spice and fruit remain the main lines of the story.

Only 275 bottles were filled, and with the last bottles now in focus, this release has a distinct place in the rum selection at Drankenshop Broekmans. It is a concentrated snapshot of Belizean rum through one individual cask.

About 1423 RUM WORLD CLASS

1423 World Class Spirits started as a hobby in the basement, early in the 2000s. A group of friends with a love for whisky were convinced to try rum at a trade fair in Denmark. Their world changed then and there: the door to the unique and fantastic world of rum was opened. Not long after, they bottled their first rum, a blend of Barbados and Trinidad. Today, many years later, 1423 is one of the fastest growing distributors of spirits in Denmark, and they also have several own brands in the portfolio. Common theme in their activities: quality, price, service and hard work!

Frequently asked questions

What kind of rum is Belize 2005?

Belize 2005 is a mélasse rum .

Molasses is fermented and distilled, after which the rum can be aged in barrels. Molasses is a by-product of sugar production and contains many sugars that are converted into alcohol and complex flavourings during fermentation.

Is Belize 2005 a no age statement rum (NAS)?

No, Belize 2005 is not a no age statement (NAS) rum. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest rum found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Belize 2005 a single cask rum?

Yes, Belize 2005 is a single cask rum. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Belize 2005 a rum at cask strength?

Yes, Belize 2005 is a rum cask strength. A cask strength rum is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is Belize 2005 suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Belize 2005 is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular rum combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced rum-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Belize 2005 might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Belize 2005 een goede keuze voor mij?

This Belize 2005 can be a rum that suits you if you like a rum with a spicy character. Indeed, this spiciness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as it is of course only one part of the overall character of this rum.

Is Belize 2005 a spicy rum?

Yes, Belize 2005 is a rum with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this rum will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Belize 2005 a fruity rum?

Yes, Belize 2005 is a rum with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this rum will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Is Belize 2005 a sweet rum?

By itself, yes, but the sweetness in this Belize 2005 rum is only slightly present in the flavour profile.

Sweet rum is usually the most accessible version. Because that pronounced sweetness is missing here, it may be a rum that does not strike a mainstream chord with everyone.

Do you drink Belize 2005 pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Belize 2005 rum best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to rum. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your rum, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Belize 2005 have a high alcohol content?

Rum of more than 52% is rather rare. Often, such a high alcohol content is due to the fact that it is a cask strength rum (a rum cask strength): the rum in that case is not diluted before bottling so it goes into the bottle at a higher alcohol content. Rum with a high alcohol content often benefits from a few drops of water to release the aromas and make the alcohol less predominant in the glass, and in itself is also fine for use in stronger cocktails.

Is Belize 2005 an independent bottling?

Belize 2005 is a rum of the 1423 Rum World Class brand bottled by the independent bottler 1423 Single Barrel Selection. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Belize 2005 a solera rum?

No, Belize 2005 is not produced according to the solera system.

Is Belize 2005 suitable for making a Dark 'n Stormy cocktail?

The "Dark 'n Stormy" cocktail is a protected trademark of Gosling Brothers Ltd. According to official rules, a cocktail may therefore only be called Dark 'N Stormy (with one apostrophe) if it is made with Gosling's Rum and ginger beer.

Since Gosling only registered the name with single apostrophe, the same cocktail is also described elsewhere as a Dark 'n' Stormy (with double apostrophe) or as a Safe Harbor in an attempt to get out from under the trademark and licensing problems.

If you don't mind the official designation and want to make a cocktail based on the recipe of the official Dark 'n Stormy, this Belize 2005 is definitely a good choice. To make an official, correct Dark 'n Stormy, however, you need Gosling's Black Seal rum.

Is Belize 2005 vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Belize 2005 a biological rum?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Belize 2005 rum from 1423 Rum World Class is not an organic product.
