Château Le Bon Pasteur 2020 Magnum is a red Pomerol from Bordeaux in a 1.5-litre bottle, a format that immediately gives the wine a sense of occasion and patience. This is the château's grand vin, made in 2020 from 80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc. At Drankenshop Broekmans, it is the kind of bottle we would point out to someone looking for Pomerol with ripe dark fruit, structure and a clear capacity to develop further in bottle.The château describes 2020 as a historically early vintage. A wet autumn and mild, dry winter allowed the vines to build reserves, before a warm, dry season brought ripeness, power and aromatic freshness. The estate farms around 6.5 to 6.7 hectares in Pomerol's Maillet sector, close to the border with Saint-Émilion, with vines averaging about 40 years of age on clay-gravel soils.
In the cellar, the approach is detailed and selective: hand harvesting, double sorting, intra-parcel selection, cold maceration, followed by fermentation and ageing in French oak barriques, 70% of them new. Michel Rolland is noted as consulting oenologist, with Benoît Prévôt as director-oenologist and winemaker.
The published drinking windows clearly place this among wines made for further ageing, with guidance broadly ranging from the mid-to-late 2020s through 2040 and beyond. If opened young, aeration helps the structure and aromas unfold. In magnum, and with only limited remaining availability, this is a Pomerol to set aside for a meaningful meal or to follow as it matures.
