Flavour notes

In the glass, Château Couhins Rood 2021 shows a deep purple colour. Aromatically, it moves through ripe black fruit, with black cherry, cassis, blackberry and plum, alongside raspberry, floral touches and sweet spice. Further layers bring leather, liquorice, mocha, tobacco, smoke, grilled herbs and subtle woody notes.

On the palate, the dark fruit remains at the centre. There is volume and freshness, with tannins that range from fine to firm and can show a chalky or powdery feel. The texture is described as velvety, with a persistent length where fruit, spice and gentle wood nuances remain together.

Product info about Chateau Couhins Red 2021

Château Couhins Rood 2021 is the red grand vin of Château Couhins from Pessac-Léognan, on the edge of Bordeaux. The estate has a distinctive position in the region: it is owned by INRAE, the French national research institute for agriculture, food and the environment. That gives Couhins a profile where winegrowing, vineyard research and innovation are closely connected.

The 2021 red is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. Cabernet Sauvignon clearly shapes the wine's personality, bringing structure, dark fruit and a fresh line through the palate. The grapes come from the estate's 22 hectares of red vineyards, grown on gravel rises and a clay-limestone slope, firmly placing the wine within the Pessac-Léognan tradition.

Winemaking included destemming, density sorting, pigeage, controlled pump-overs and délestage, followed by an average maceration of 21 to 28 days. The wine then matured for 12 months in French oak barriques. At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of Bordeaux we like to present with a little context: classic in origin, yet coming from an estate with a strong environmental direction, HVE-certified at the time and in conversion to organic farming, while the 2021 vintage itself should not be described as organically certified.

Serve it at around 16°C. Château Couhins suggests duck, and the wine also has the structure and dark-fruited depth to sit comfortably alongside red meat in sauce.

About CH COUHINS

Chateau Couhins is a winery from the Bordeaux region in France, specifically located in the Pessac-Leognan appellation, south of the city of Bordeaux. The estate has a long history and was originally part of a much larger domain before being divided in the 20th century. Since the 1960s, the largest part of the vineyard has belonged to the Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (INRAE), giving Couhins a special connection with science and innovation within viticulture. Chateau Couhins is known for both its red and white wines, but has especially built a strong reputation with its dry white wine, which consists of the characteristic Bordeaux blend, mostly Sauvignon Blanc. The vineyards benefit from the unique gravel and clay soils of Pessac-Leognan, which results in wines with finesse, freshness, and a subtle mineral character. Couhins received the Graves Grand Cru Classe classification in 1959 for white wine, highlighting its quality. The range typically includes the Grand Vin and a second wine, focusing on both traditional methods and modern vinification techniques. With a combination of historical roots, scientific approach, and the typical terroir of Pessac-Leognan, Chateau Couhins is considered an interesting choice for lovers of elegant Bordeaux wines.
