Asta Morris Calvados 1963 59y is the kind of bottle where the age statement immediately draws you in, yet the real interest lies in how much life the spirit still seems to carry. A French calvados from 1963, matured for almost six decades, is already remarkable; the tasting notes make it clear that it has kept an elegant and layered energy.The character moves well beyond simple orchard fruit. Apple cider and pear notes are joined by butterscotch, chestnuts, cocoa, freshly roasted coffee, dried herbs, nuts and more earthy touches such as mushrooms and pine cones. It gives the calvados a mature, contemplative side while still keeping the fruit at the centre.
At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the sort of release we like to present slowly: an old fruit eau-de-vie with depth, warmth and a long development in the glass. With only the last bottles remaining, its sense of rarity is very much part of the experience.
