Beirao is a Portuguese liqueur that originates from the Lousão region, in the heart of Portugal. The drink was developed at the end of the 19th century and has since been produced according to a traditional recipe that is known for its carefully composed mix of herbs and aromatic seeds. Beirao is made based on a double distillation of various botanicals, including among others cinnamon, lavender, and rosemary, but the full list of used ingredients is a well-kept secret. The liqueur is typically presented in a recognizable round-shaped bottle and a characteristic red-white label. In Portugal, Beirao has grown into one of the most popular national liqueurs, often served pure, with ice, or as a base in various cocktails.
