About REY CAMPERO
De palenque (of distilleerderij) van Rey Campero staat op een heilige plek, de Candelaria Yegolé. Er wonen maar net 100 mensen en weinig onder hen zijn jongeren. Helaas zijn de meesten van de jonge generatie weggetrokken, op zoek naar een beter leven. Daar, op deze imposante en ruige plek, heeft de natuur de ravijnen en hellingen van de heuvels bezaaid met de mooiste agaveplanten.
De distilleerderij Sanchez, gelegen in deze hoek van Oaxaca, is al meer dan zeven decennia in bedrijf, en de meesters ervan maken mezcal. Hun kennis heeft hen de ervaring gegeven om het land, het water en het vuur te begrijpen en te respecteren. Sinds enkele jaren deelt deze familie van mezcaleros hun kennis en nemen zij een aantal mensen uit de gemeenschap en meer recentelijk uit dorpen in de regio in dienst.
In deze palenque wordt niet alleen gedistilleerd, maar worden ook vriendschappen gesmeed om het gemeenschapsweefsel weer op te bouwen en de traditie van mezcal levend te houden.
