Product info about Cambus Grain 1988 28y

Cambus Grain 1988 28y is a Scottish Lowland grain whisky built around age, cask individuality and scarcity. Distilled in 1988 and bottled in 2016, it spent 28 years maturing before being released as a single cask whisky.

Its small scale is what gives this bottling much of its appeal. Drawn from one hogshead, it yielded just 60 bottles and was bottled at cask strength at 47.4%. Rather than a broad regular release, this is a very specific snapshot of one individual cask from Cambus.

Within the whisky selection at Drankenshop Broekmans, a bottle like this stands out for its combination of mature age statement, Lowland grain character and very limited availability. The fact that it is marked as last bottles makes that scarcity even more tangible.

No separate aroma or flavour notes are provided for this bottling. What can be stated with certainty is that it is a 28-year-old Cambus grain whisky from a single hogshead, bottled at cask strength at 47.4%.

The tasting experience is therefore centred on the individuality of that one cask and the long period of maturation, without a predefined flavour description being imposed.

About CAMBUS

Cambus was founded in 1806 as a Lowland single malt distillery and was converted to a grain distillery 30 years later, at one point producing 10% of the total grain whisky output in Scotland. Cambus has faced a major fire and several periods of inactivity throughout its history. In 1993 it finally closed its doors after a major reorganisation by owner Diageo.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Cambus Grain 1988 28y?

Cambus Grain 1988 28y is a grain whisky .

Grain whisky is made from a grain other than barley, such as wheat and/or maize. It is distilled in fairly large-scale column stills, also known as distillery columns.

As with malt whisky, in this category you also have 'single grain' whisky that comes from just one distillery, and 'blended' whisky that comes from multiple distilleries. Both variants are not very common.

Is Cambus Grain 1988 28y a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Cambus Grain 1988 28y is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Cambus Grain 1988 28y a single cask whisky?

Yes, Cambus Grain 1988 28y is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Cambus Grain 1988 28y a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, Cambus Grain 1988 28y is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is Cambus Grain 1988 28y suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Cambus Grain 1988 28y is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Cambus Grain 1988 28y might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Do you drink Cambus Grain 1988 28y pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Cambus Grain 1988 28y whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Cambus Grain 1988 28y have a high alcohol content?

The alcohol content of this Cambus Grain 1988 28y is higher than what you would expect from an average whisky expect. While not extremely exceptional, a whisky of around 46% is somewhat rarer anyway. Most whisky is usually closer to 40%.

Is Cambus Grain 1988 28y an independent bottling?

Cambus Grain 1988 28y is a whisky of the Cambus brand bottled by the independent bottler The Whisky Agency. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Cambus Grain 1988 28y suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Cambus Grain 1988 28y is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Cambus Grain 1988 28y vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Cambus Grain 1988 28y a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Cambus Grain 1988 28y whisky from Cambus is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
