Product info about Benriach 1966 50y Gm Bok

Benriach 1966 50y Gm Bok is a Scottish whisky with a story built around age, rarity and independent bottling. It is a 50-year-old Benriach from 1966, bottled by Gordon & McPhail as part of the Book of Kelts series, giving it a very different presence from a standard distillery release.

Only 87 bottles were produced, so this is a remarkably small release. With the remaining availability now down to the last bottles, the sense of scarcity is very clear without needing to overstate it.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, a whisky like this is valued for what it represents: long maturation, a historic year reference and a release with clear collector appeal. Bottled at 54.3% alcohol, it is presented with notable strength, although no detailed tasting notes have been provided.

No specific aroma or flavour notes have been supplied for Benriach 1966 50y Gm Bok. The available information identifies it as a 50-year-old Scottish Benriach, bottled by Gordon & McPhail at 54.3% alcohol.

About BENRIACH

The Spey Valley, where the BenRiach distillery was built in 1898, is home to many of Scotland's finest whiskies, but BenRiach has its own unique character - tied to the specific methods and skills of the BenRiach men who make the whisky, the ingrediënts they use, the unique copper stills and high-quality casks selected for maturation. BenRiach offers yet another special difference that sets them apart from the other Spey Valley distilleries, namely the traditional floor malting with their special pagoda-style kilns. Here the peated barley malt is made with which the distillery manages to impart the defining peat aroma into some of their special bottlings.

Although this Benriach 1966 50y Gm Bok is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Benriach 1966 50y Gm Bok might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Benriach 1966 50y Gm Bok a whisky to invest in?

Benriach 1966 50y Gm Bok is a whisky of Benriach that was referred to by us as a Collector'swhisky. That is, we believe they have the most potential to increase in value over time.

Whether that will actually happen we obviously cannot predict. We therefore always advise never to invest or speculate in whisky that you would never want to drink yourself out of.

Do you drink Benriach 1966 50y Gm Bok pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Benriach 1966 50y Gm Bok whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Benriach 1966 50y Gm Bok have a high alcohol content?

Whisky of more than 52% is rather rare. Often, such a high alcohol content is due to the fact that it is a cask strength whisky (a whisky cask strength): the whisky in that case is not diluted before bottling so it goes into the bottle at a higher alcohol content. Whisky with a high alcohol content often benefits from a few drops of water to release the aromas and make the alcohol less predominant in the glass, and in itself is also fine for use in stronger cocktails.

Benriach 1966 50y Gm Bok is a whisky of the Benriach brand bottled by the independent bottler Gordon & McPhail. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Benriach 1966 50y Gm Bok suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Benriach 1966 50y Gm Bok is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Benriach 1966 50y Gm Bok a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Benriach 1966 50y Gm Bok whisky from Benriach is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
