Product info about Brora 30y The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2011

Brora 30y The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2011 is the kind of Scottish single malt where the name already carries much of the intrigue. Brora, 30 years of age, and a release connected to The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2011 give this bottle a very specific place among mature whiskies.

The strength of 52.9% suggests a whisky with real presence, while the profile points to a layered style rather than a single dominant trait. Wood, spice and fruit are the clearest elements, supported by lighter floral, saline and peated touches. That combination gives the impression of maturity with enough contrast to keep the whisky from feeling one-dimensional.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this Brora stands out as a scarce and collectable bottle, especially with only the last bottles remaining. Its appeal lies in the combination of age, Scottish single malt character, event-linked bottling and limited availability.

Based on the supplied flavour profile, this Brora is centred on wood, spice and fruit. These are the main pillars of the whisky, with floral, salty and lightly peated elements playing a more restrained supporting role.

As no detailed tasting notes are provided, the description remains deliberately broad: a mature single malt with structure, presence and several secondary accents around its core profile.

About BRORA

Brora is a Scottish single malt whisky originating from the north of Scotland, in the village of Brora on the east coast of Sutherland. The distillery was originally established in 1819 under the name Clynelish, but was renamed Brora from 1968 when a new Clynelish distillery was built on the same site. Brora remained active until 1983 and then closed its doors, making the brand mainly known for decades for rare and often highly regarded bottlings. Brora`s whiskies are often distinguished by a powerful style with peated and slightly salty notes, something that especially characterizes the older production years. Brora bottlings are loved by collectors and enthusiasts, partly because the stock remained limited for years to old reserves from the closed distillery. In 2021, Brora reopened its doors after a thorough restoration, with the aim of producing exclusive single malt whisky again according to the original methods. The name Brora is thus connected to both a glorious past and a promise for the future of classic Highland whisky.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Brora 30y The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2011?

Brora 30y The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2011 is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Brora 30y The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2011 a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Brora 30y The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2011 is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Brora 30y The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2011 a single cask whisky?

No, Brora 30y The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2011 is not a single cask whisky.

Is Brora 30y The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2011 a whisky at cask strength?

No, Brora 30y The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2011 is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Brora 30y The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2011 suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Brora 30y The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2011 is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Brora 30y The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2011 might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Brora 30y The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2011 a whisky to invest in?

Brora 30y The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2011 is a whisky of Brora that was referred to by us as a Collector'swhisky. That is, we believe they have the most potential to increase in value over time.

Whether that will actually happen we obviously cannot predict. We therefore always advise never to invest or speculate in whisky that you would never want to drink yourself out of.

Is Brora 30y The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2011 een goede keuze voor mij?

This Brora 30y The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2011 can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a woody character. Indeed, this woodiness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as this is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Brora 30y The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2011 a tarred whisky?

On its own, yes, but Brora 30y The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2011 is one whisky in which the smokiness is only very slightly present in the flavour profile. So you will find some peatiness in it, but it is balanced with the rest and does not take over.

Peat is a typical flavour associated with a particular type of whisky. It is a flavour you have to (learn to) love. A whisky like this one, which is only mildly peated, is a great stepping stone to get acquainted with this flavour type.

Is Brora 30y The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2011 a spicy whisky?

Yes, Brora 30y The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2011 is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Brora 30y The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2011 a fruity whisky?

Yes, Brora 30y The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2011 is a whisky with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Brora 30y The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2011 pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Brora 30y The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2011 whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Brora 30y The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2011 have a high alcohol content?

Whisky of more than 52% is rather rare. Often, such a high alcohol content is due to the fact that it is a cask strength whisky (a whisky cask strength): the whisky in that case is not diluted before bottling so it goes into the bottle at a higher alcohol content. Whisky with a high alcohol content often benefits from a few drops of water to release the aromas and make the alcohol less predominant in the glass, and in itself is also fine for use in stronger cocktails.

Is Brora 30y The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2011 an independent bottling?

Brora 30y The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2011 is a whisky of the Brora brand bottled by the independent bottler Speciality Drinks. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Brora 30y The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2011 suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Brora 30y The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2011 is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
