The Ardbeg Auriverdes 2014 is a good choice for collectors who appreciate a premium whisky. This whisky comes from the Scottish Islay and was bottled at 49.9%. Flavour notes

The flavour impression is driven by strong peat and a clearly salty character. Fruity, spicy and woody elements are present, but they sit in a supporting role rather than taking over. The overall profile feels firm, smoky and salt-led, with the main tension built around peat and salinity.

Product info about Ardbeg Auriverdes 2014

Ardbeg Auriverdes 2014 is an Islay whisky with a very clear direction: peat and salt are at the centre of its character. At 49.9% ABV, it has a firm presence, while the available information keeps the focus on the whisky's identity rather than on unprovided cask or maturation details. The name anchors this Ardbeg firmly in 2014, giving it the feel of a specific release from that year.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, a bottle like this naturally stands out for customers who follow Ardbeg releases closely. As it is marked as a collectors item, it carries an additional sense of interest beyond the glass itself. Still, its flavour direction is straightforward: pronounced peat and salt, with fruit, spice and wood acting more as supporting elements.

About ARDBEG

Ardbeg was founded in 1815 by local farmers. After many successful years, the distillery had to be closed in 1981. From 1989 to 1997, production was restarted, with small batches. In that year, Ardbeg was taken over by Glenmorangie Plc. Ardbeg has long been known as one of the most appreciated whiskies among both enthusiasts and professional connoisseurs. Ardbeg is considered one of the most peated whiskies of the south coast of Islay.

Is Ardbeg Auriverdes 2014 a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Ardbeg Auriverdes 2014 is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Ardbeg Auriverdes 2014 suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Ardbeg Auriverdes 2014 is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Ardbeg Auriverdes 2014 might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Ardbeg Auriverdes 2014 a whisky to invest in?

Ardbeg Auriverdes 2014 is a whisky of Ardbeg that was referred to by us as a Collector'swhisky. That is, we believe they have the most potential to increase in value over time.

Whether that will actually happen we obviously cannot predict. We therefore always advise never to invest or speculate in whisky that you would never want to drink yourself out of.

Is Ardbeg Auriverdes 2014 een goede keuze voor mij?

This Ardbeg Auriverdes 2014 can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a briny character. Indeed, this saltiness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also look at the rest of the flavour profile, as this saltiness is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Ardbeg Auriverdes 2014 a tarred whisky?

Yes, Ardbeg Auriverdes 2014 is a whisky with an intensely textured flavour profile: you will be able to detect the smokiness of this whisky right from the first sip from your glass. It is a typical characteristic flavour in a particular type whisky that you have to (learn to) love.

Is Ardbeg Auriverdes 2014 a spicy whisky?

On its own, yes, but this Ardbeg Auriverdes 2014 is one whisky with only a slightly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky is not emphatic in the flavour profile, but it is there.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Ardbeg Auriverdes 2014 a fruity whisky?

On its own, yes, but Ardbeg Auriverdes 2014 is a whisky with only a slightly fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky is hidden in the flavour profile, balanced with the other parts of the profile.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Ardbeg Auriverdes 2014 pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Ardbeg Auriverdes 2014 whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Ardbeg Auriverdes 2014 have a high alcohol content?

Ardbeg Auriverdes 2014 is not whisky for sissies. The alcohol content of this bottle is quite a bit above the 40% you usually whisky expect, so it's best to take into account that this one can come in solid.

Is Ardbeg Auriverdes 2014 an independent bottling?

No, Ardbeg Auriverdes 2014 is an official bottling of Ardbeg.

Is Ardbeg Auriverdes 2014 suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Ardbeg Auriverdes 2014 is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Ardbeg Auriverdes 2014 vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Ardbeg Auriverdes 2014 a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Ardbeg Auriverdes 2014 whisky from Ardbeg is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
