The aroma opens with freshly harvested barley and orchard fruit, joined by wild bergamot, pear and meadowsweet honey over a softly kilned malt base.

On the palate, the malt feels smooth and creamy, carrying clementine, floral honey and gentle barley spice. The finish lingers with apricot, malted almond and a delicate trace of wild cherry.

Product info about Benriach Malting Season 2nd Edition

Benriach Malting Season 2nd Edition brings the focus back to one of the most tangible parts of the distillery: the malting floors that have stood at the heart of Benriach for more than 120 years. During the annual Malting Season, barley is malted there in the traditional way, giving this single malt a direct link to the craft inside the distillery.

This 9-year-old Speyside whisky was distilled in 2013 and matured in a bourbon barrel. At 48.9%, it has enough strength to carry its malt-driven character, while still leaving room for fruit, floral notes and gentle spice to come through clearly.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of Benriach we like to introduce when someone is curious about a release with a real production story behind it. With the last bottles now available, it also underlines the limited nature of this particular Malting Season edition.

About BENRIACH

The Spey Valley, where the BenRiach distillery was built in 1898, is home to many of Scotland's finest whiskies, but the BenRiach has its own unique character - tied to the specific methods and skills of the BenRiach men who make the whisky, the ingrediënts they use, the unique copper stills and high quality casks selected for maturation. BenRiach offers yet another special difference that sets them apart from the other Spey Valley distilleries, namely the traditional floor malting with their special pagoda style kilns. Here the peated barley malt is made, allowing the distillery to succeed in giving the defining peat aroma to some of their special bottlings.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Benriach Malting Season 2nd Edition?

Benriach Malting Season 2nd Edition is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Benriach Malting Season 2nd Edition a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Benriach Malting Season 2nd Edition is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Benriach Malting Season 2nd Edition a single cask whisky?

No, Benriach Malting Season 2nd Edition is not a single cask whisky.

Is Benriach Malting Season 2nd Edition a whisky at cask strength?

No, Benriach Malting Season 2nd Edition is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Benriach Malting Season 2nd Edition suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Benriach Malting Season 2nd Edition is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Benriach Malting Season 2nd Edition might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Benriach Malting Season 2nd Edition een goede keuze voor mij?

This Benriach Malting Season 2nd Edition can be a whisky one that suits you if you like a whisky with a floral character. Indeed, this florality is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also look at the rest of the flavour profile, as this florality is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Benriach Malting Season 2nd Edition a tarred whisky?

On its own, yes, but Benriach Malting Season 2nd Edition is one whisky in which the smokiness is only very slightly present in the flavour profile. So you will find some peatiness in it, but it is balanced with the rest and does not take over.

Peat is a typical flavour associated with a particular type of whisky. It is a flavour you have to (learn to) love. A whisky like this one, which is only mildly peated, is a great stepping stone to get acquainted with this flavour type.

Is Benriach Malting Season 2nd Edition a spicy whisky?

Yes, Benriach Malting Season 2nd Edition is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Benriach Malting Season 2nd Edition a fruity whisky?

Yes, Benriach Malting Season 2nd Edition is a whisky with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Benriach Malting Season 2nd Edition pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Benriach Malting Season 2nd Edition whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Benriach Malting Season 2nd Edition have a high alcohol content?

Benriach Malting Season 2nd Edition is not whisky for sissies. The alcohol content of this bottle is quite a bit above the 40% you usually whisky expect, so it's best to take into account that this one can come in solid.

Is Benriach Malting Season 2nd Edition an independent bottling?

No, Benriach Malting Season 2nd Edition is an official bottling of Benriach.

Is Benriach Malting Season 2nd Edition suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Benriach Malting Season 2nd Edition is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Benriach Malting Season 2nd Edition vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Benriach Malting Season 2nd Edition a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Benriach Malting Season 2nd Edition whisky from Benriach is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
