Flavour notes

The flavour profile is led by fruit and spice. These two elements form the centre of the whisky, with lighter support from wood, floral touches and a small salty accent.

Peat is present only in a restrained way. It adds a subtle layer rather than taking control, leaving an impression built around fruit, spice and gentle supporting notes.

Product info about Wolfburn Let It Snow

Wolfburn Let It Snow is a Highland single malt from Scotland with a name that naturally brings a winter mood to mind. With no age statement, the focus is less on a number and more on the style in the glass: a 46% whisky with enough strength to carry its fruity and spicy side clearly.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this Wolfburn stands out for the way its main flavours are supported by gentler accents. Fruit and spice are the most prominent elements, while wood, floral notes, a light salty edge and a subtle touch of peat stay in the background. It gives the whisky a layered feel without pushing it into a heavy style.

As these are the last bottles, Let It Snow has become one of those releases that will not remain part of the selection indefinitely. More information about the brand can be found at https://www.wolfburn.com

About WOLFBURN

Way up in the far north of the Scottish mainland, on the shores overlooking the Orkney Islands, you will find Wolfburn Distillery. It has only been there since 2013, but in the meantime it has already stolen the hearts of many a whisky lover. They do this through an uncomplicated approach and a focus on quality spirit aged in good casks. It is a fairly small distillery, with an annual capacity of just 135,000 litres. When it was founded, it was the most northerly distillery on the mainland, but in the meantime there are two more (smaller) distilleries just a little further north, with 8 Doors and North Point). Wolfburn doesn't really need that title though, the whisky speaks for itself.

At Wolfburn, they work with a small mashtun (1.1 tonnes) and four washbacks, in which fermentation takes between 70-92 hours. The copper stills have a capacity of 5,500 litres (wash still) and 3,600 litres (spirit still) respectively. Untasted whisky is mainly made at Wolfburn, although small amounts of tarted malt are also experimented with. A major milestone for the distillery was the launch of their very first whisky with an age statement for the standard range: the 10yo, launched in 2023, was met with good response from tasters around the world.

In addition to the 10yo, Wolfburn's base range includes a diverse range of flavour profiles, including the Northland (American oak, quarter casks), Aurora (bourbon and sherry casks) and the Morven (with a slight hint of peat). The consistently high quality of this base range is striking, and there are also a number of limited bottlings every year, which are also always worth discovering.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Wolfburn Let It Snow?

Wolfburn Let It Snow is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Wolfburn Let It Snow a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

Yes, Wolfburn Let It Snow is a no age statement (NAS) whisky. But what exactly does that mean?

According to the rules, when an age is stated on the bottle, it must always be the youngest whisky in the blend and not the age that is the most represented percentage-wise in the blend. A producer will therefore consciously choose not to state an age on his bottle in two cases: when an old whisky is blended with a small proportion of younger whisky, or when young whisky is blended with a proportion of older whisky. In the first case, he does not want to put a young age on his bottle if his blend contains mainly older whisky, and in the second case, from a marketing point of view it is more interesting to go out with that particle of older whisky.

Is Wolfburn Let It Snow a single cask whisky?

No, Wolfburn Let It Snow is not a single cask whisky.

Is Wolfburn Let It Snow a whisky at cask strength?

No, Wolfburn Let It Snow is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Wolfburn Let It Snow suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Wolfburn Let It Snow is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Wolfburn Let It Snow might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Wolfburn Let It Snow een goede keuze voor mij?

This Wolfburn Let It Snow can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a spicy character. Indeed, this spiciness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as it is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Wolfburn Let It Snow a tarred whisky?

On its own, yes, but Wolfburn Let It Snow is one whisky in which the smokiness is only very slightly present in the flavour profile. So you will find some peatiness in it, but it is balanced with the rest and does not take over.

Peat is a typical flavour associated with a particular type of whisky. It is a flavour you have to (learn to) love. A whisky like this one, which is only mildly peated, is a great stepping stone to get acquainted with this flavour type.

Is Wolfburn Let It Snow a spicy whisky?

Yes, Wolfburn Let It Snow is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Wolfburn Let It Snow a fruity whisky?

Yes, Wolfburn Let It Snow is a whisky with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Wolfburn Let It Snow pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Wolfburn Let It Snow whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Wolfburn Let It Snow have a high alcohol content?

The alcohol content of this Wolfburn Let It Snow is higher than what you would expect from an average whisky expect. While not extremely exceptional, a whisky of around 46% is somewhat rarer anyway. Most whisky is usually closer to 40%.

Is Wolfburn Let It Snow an independent bottling?

No, Wolfburn Let It Snow is an official bottling of Wolfburn.

Is Wolfburn Let It Snow suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Wolfburn Let It Snow is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Wolfburn Let It Snow vegan?

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
