Flavour notes

The flavour profile points towards a firm combination of peat and spice, amplified by the cask strength bottling. Wood, fruit, floral tones and a light salty edge sit in a more supporting role, keeping the focus on intensity and structure.

At 61%, this Ballechin is a whisky to take slowly. Its main impression is shaped by smoky, peated force and a clearly spiced backbone, with the subtler elements adding background detail rather than taking over.

Product info about Ballechin 2008 14y

Ballechin 2008 14y is a Highland single malt with a very defined sense of place and time. Distilled on 10 September 2008 and bottled on 26 October 2022, it spent 14 years maturing before being bottled at cask strength. As a single cask release limited to 480 bottles, it speaks much more of one individual cask than of a broad house style.

The Rum Matured indication gives this release an extra point of interest, while the 61% alcohol strength keeps the whisky close to its original cask character. This is a bottling with presence, made for drinkers who appreciate strength, individuality and limited-release Scotch malt.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, releases like this are valued because they capture a specific maturation story: one cask, one age, one distillation date and one bottling date. With the last bottles now remaining, this Ballechin has become an increasingly scarce expression within the selection.

About BALLECHIN

The origins of Edradour, located in Pitlochry, in the southern Highlands, date back to 1825. At that time, the distillery was called Glenforres. The current name was not mentioned until 1837. Today, Edradour, with more than 100,000 visitors per year, is one of the busiest distilleries in Scotland. All of the single malt distilled at Edradour is intended to be bottled as single malt, except for the small portion used for the Edradour Cream. Since 2003, Edradour has been experimenting under the leadership of Iain Henderson with the distillation of heavily peated whisky. The resulting single malt goes by the lovely name Ballechin. The barley used to make this single malt is peated with at least 50ppm phenol. This competes with its Islay cousins!

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Ballechin 2008 14y?

Ballechin 2008 14y is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Ballechin 2008 14y a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Ballechin 2008 14y is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Ballechin 2008 14y a single cask whisky?

Yes, Ballechin 2008 14y is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Ballechin 2008 14y a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, Ballechin 2008 14y is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is Ballechin 2008 14y suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Ballechin 2008 14y is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Ballechin 2008 14y might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Ballechin 2008 14y een goede keuze voor mij?

This Ballechin 2008 14y can be a whisky one that suits you if you like a whisky with a smoky character. Indeed, the peat flavour is quite prominent in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also look at the rest of the flavour profile, as this peatiness is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Ballechin 2008 14y a tarred whisky?

Yes, Ballechin 2008 14y is a whisky with a reasonably peated flavour profile: the smokiness of this whisky will be unmistakable with every sip. However, it is more moderate than in the most intensely peated whisky.

Peaty, smoky or peat is a typical flavour associated with a particular type of whisky. It is a flavour you have to (learn to) love.

Is Ballechin 2008 14y a spicy whisky?

Yes, Ballechin 2008 14y is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Ballechin 2008 14y a fruity whisky?

On its own, yes, but Ballechin 2008 14y is a whisky with only a slightly fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky is hidden in the flavour profile, balanced with the other parts of the profile.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Ballechin 2008 14y pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Ballechin 2008 14y whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Ballechin 2008 14y have a high alcohol content?

Whisky of more than 52% is rather rare. Often, such a high alcohol content is due to the fact that it is a cask strength whisky (a whisky cask strength): the whisky in that case is not diluted before bottling so it goes into the bottle at a higher alcohol content. Whisky with a high alcohol content often benefits from a few drops of water to release the aromas and make the alcohol less predominant in the glass, and in itself is also fine for use in stronger cocktails.

Is Ballechin 2008 14y an independent bottling?

No, Ballechin 2008 14y is an official bottling of Ballechin.

Is Ballechin 2008 14y suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Ballechin 2008 14y is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Ballechin 2008 14y vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Ballechin 2008 14y a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Ballechin 2008 14y whisky from Ballechin is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
