Our buying advice for Benriach 40y The Forty

The Benriach 40y The Forty is the perfect choice for enthusiasts who love an exclusive single malt whisky. This whisky comes from the Scottish Speyside and was bottled at 43.5%. This powerful and intensely fruity whisky requires a developed palate. We advise beginners not to start with this type of whisky because the profile can be too overwhelming. The price of this single malt whisky is somewhat higher, but the taste and quality make it more than worth it.

Flavour notes

The aroma is richly fruit-driven, with sweet orange, plum and honeyed pomelo at the front. Beneath that come berries coated in dark chocolate, soft walnut and a cherry-like note.

On the palate, the fruit becomes generous and layered: orchard fruit, silky morello cherries, gentle nectarine, stewed red apple and white peach. The finish is soft and velvety, with walnut and kumquat leaving the final impression.

Product info about Benriach 40y The Forty

Benriach 40y The Forty is a Speyside single malt shaped above all by time. Each batch is a vatting of just three casks, gently reduced to maintain a consistent 43.5% ABV. The label's More Than Forty Years statement feels entirely in keeping with a whisky built around maturity, patience and depth.

Its background is especially interesting because Benriach made the bold choice in the 1970s to distil small batches of heavily peated whisky in a region better known for unpeated malt. The Forty includes a rare selection of these old peated Speyside casks. After several decades, the smoky side has softened and refined, turning into a polished style full of ripe fruit.

American oak bourbon casks bring honeyed pomelo and mature stone fruit, while Port casks from Portugal's Douro Valley add darker tones of chocolate, plum and gentle walnut. At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of bottle we would introduce as a mature and deeply fruit-led expression of Benriach's character.

About BENRIACH

The Spey Valley, where the BenRiach distillery was built in 1898, is home to many of Scotland's finest whiskies, but the BenRiach has its own unique character - tied to the specific methods and skills of the BenRiach men who make the whisky, the ingrediënts they use, the unique copper stills and high quality casks selected for maturation. BenRiach offers yet another special difference that sets them apart from the other Spey Valley distilleries, namely the traditional floor malting with their special pagoda style kilns. Here the peated barley malt is made, allowing the distillery to succeed in giving the defining peat aroma to some of their special bottlings.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Benriach 40y The Forty?

Benriach 40y The Forty is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Benriach 40y The Forty a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Benriach 40y The Forty is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Benriach 40y The Forty a single cask whisky?

No, Benriach 40y The Forty is not a single cask whisky.

Is Benriach 40y The Forty a whisky at cask strength?

No, Benriach 40y The Forty is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Benriach 40y The Forty suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Benriach 40y The Forty is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Benriach 40y The Forty might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Benriach 40y The Forty een goede keuze voor mij?

This Benriach 40y The Forty can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a woody character. Indeed, this woodiness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as this is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Benriach 40y The Forty a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Benriach 40y The Forty whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Benriach 40y The Forty a spicy whisky?

On its own, yes, but this Benriach 40y The Forty is one whisky with only a slightly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky is not emphatic in the flavour profile, but it is there.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Benriach 40y The Forty a fruity whisky?

Yes, Benriach 40y The Forty is a whisky with an intensely fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruits and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Benriach 40y The Forty pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Benriach 40y The Forty whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Benriach 40y The Forty have a high alcohol content?

The alcohol content of this Benriach 40y The Forty is higher than what you would expect from an average whisky expect. While not extremely exceptional, a whisky of around 46% is somewhat rarer anyway. Most whisky is usually closer to 40%.

Is Benriach 40y The Forty an independent bottling?

No, Benriach 40y The Forty is an official bottling of Benriach.

Is Benriach 40y The Forty suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Benriach 40y The Forty is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Benriach 40y The Forty vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Benriach 40y The Forty a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Benriach 40y The Forty whisky from Benriach is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
