Product info about Strathclyde 1993 29y Tb

Strathclyde 1993 29y Tb is a Lowland grain whisky from Scotland with a remarkable amount of time behind it. Distilled on 16 August 1993 and bottled on 1 October 2022, it captures 29 years of maturation from one individual cask.

The whisky comes from a refill barrel and was bottled at cask strength, at 57.1% ABV. That gives the release a very direct identity: not a broad house expression, but the voice of a single cask at a particular point in its life. At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of bottle we would point out to someone interested in limited whisky with a clear sense of origin and age.

Only 379 bottles were filled, and the remaining stock is now limited. Its profile is led by fruit, with lighter floral, spicy and woody elements around it. There is no peated or salty emphasis here, so the focus stays on the fruit-driven side of the whisky and the restrained influence of the refill barrel.

The available flavour profile places fruit at the centre of the whisky. Floral, spicy and woody notes are present in a lighter supporting role rather than taking over the character.

About STRATHCLYDE

Strathclyde Distillery can be found in Glasgow. It is located on the south side of the Clyde River, directly opposite Glasgow Green. It was built in 1927 with the purpose of producing neutral grain alcohol for gins. For a short period (from 1957-1975), a single malt distillery was also housed within the walls of Strathclyde, under the name Kinclaith. At present, Strathclyde is part of the Chivas Brothers group and mainly supplies grain alcohol for the blends in their range. You can also regularly find Strathclyde whiskies as bottlings from independent bottlers.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Strathclyde 1993 29y Tb?

Strathclyde 1993 29y Tb is a grain whisky .

Grain whisky is made from a grain other than barley, such as wheat and/or maize. It is distilled in fairly large-scale column stills, also known as distillery columns.

As with malt whisky, in this category you also have 'single grain' whisky that comes from just one distillery, and 'blended' whisky that comes from multiple distilleries. Both variants are not very common.

Is Strathclyde 1993 29y Tb a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Strathclyde 1993 29y Tb is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Strathclyde 1993 29y Tb a single cask whisky?

Yes, Strathclyde 1993 29y Tb is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Strathclyde 1993 29y Tb a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, Strathclyde 1993 29y Tb is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is Strathclyde 1993 29y Tb suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Strathclyde 1993 29y Tb is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Strathclyde 1993 29y Tb might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Strathclyde 1993 29y Tb een goede keuze voor mij?

This Strathclyde 1993 29y Tb can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a fruity character. Indeed, this fruitiness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also look at the rest of the flavour profile, as it is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Strathclyde 1993 29y Tb a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Strathclyde 1993 29y Tb whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Strathclyde 1993 29y Tb a spicy whisky?

On its own, yes, but this Strathclyde 1993 29y Tb is one whisky with only a slightly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky is not emphatic in the flavour profile, but it is there.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Strathclyde 1993 29y Tb a fruity whisky?

Yes, Strathclyde 1993 29y Tb is a whisky with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Strathclyde 1993 29y Tb pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Strathclyde 1993 29y Tb whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Strathclyde 1993 29y Tb have a high alcohol content?

Whisky of more than 52% is rather rare. Often, such a high alcohol content is due to the fact that it is a cask strength whisky (a whisky cask strength): the whisky in that case is not diluted before bottling so it goes into the bottle at a higher alcohol content. Whisky with a high alcohol content often benefits from a few drops of water to release the aromas and make the alcohol less predominant in the glass, and in itself is also fine for use in stronger cocktails.

Is Strathclyde 1993 29y Tb an independent bottling?

Strathclyde 1993 29y Tb is a whisky of the Strathclyde brand bottled by the independent bottler Thompson Brothers. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Strathclyde 1993 29y Tb suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Strathclyde 1993 29y Tb is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Strathclyde 1993 29y Tb vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Strathclyde 1993 29y Tb a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Strathclyde 1993 29y Tb whisky from Strathclyde is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
