Product info about Compass Box Art & Decadence

Compass Box Art & Decadence is a blended Scotch whisky with a name that sets the mood straight away. Its inspiration comes from decadence in the late nineteenth-century sense: art for art's sake, beauty without a practical excuse, and the pleasure of things that are not strictly necessary.

That idea suits this limited Compass Box release rather well. There is no age statement here; the focus is on composition, atmosphere and flavour rather than a number on the label. The background to the release refers to names such as Balmenach, Glen Moray, Port Dundas and Linkwood, giving the whisky a layered identity rather than a single-distillery voice.

At 49% ABV, Art & Decadence has the strength to carry its richer side: fruit, vanilla, dark chocolate and fragrant oak all have room to speak. At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of bottle we would introduce to someone who enjoys whisky with a clear concept and a touch of theatrical elegance.

The release is limited to 9126 bottles, and with the last bottles now in view, it has become a particularly noteworthy Compass Box edition to discover while it is still around.

The aroma is rich and expressive, with red apple, polished wax and a creamy side that brings together liquorice, banana, toffee and custard.

On the palate, dried fruit moves forward: golden raisins, apricot and apple, wrapped in plenty of vanilla. The finish lingers with dark chocolate and fragrant oak.

About COMPASS BOX

John Glaser, the man behind Compass Box, reminds us from time to time that he first worked in the wine industry before entering the world of whisky. Perhaps this experience explains his completely unique, innovative perspective on the whisky scene. His way of designing whisky continuously surprises the scotch world, which generally follows a more academic approach. For example, a few months ago, John was once again called to account by the SWA (Scotch Whisky Association). The reason for this was too much transparency about the exact contents of several of his creations (age, names of distilleries of the spirits, type of cask, whisky percentages in the recipe,Èì), and that precisely during a period of persistent consumer demand for more information about the products they consume! Apart from this controversy, Compass Box indeed shakes the world of traditional blending to its foundations with a truly artisanal approach. This is, without any doubt, the key to the pleasure that Compass Box wants to offer enthusiasts with each of its creations. For this purpose, Glaser goes much further than the average merchant in selecting his single malts and single grains. He commits himself to not only developing a new whisky during the blending of these eaux de vie, but also to evoking a previously completely unknown emotion.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Compass Box Art & Decadence?

Compass Box Art & Decadence is a blend whisky .

By far the most widely drunk and produced whisky in the world. By far means around 90-95% here. The most well-known variant of blended whisky is blended Scotch whisky.

Blended whisky is a mixture (blend in trade jargon) of matured malt whiskies made from malted barley and matured whisky made from other grains (also called grain whisky). The percentage of grain whisky can vary depending on the brand. In a blend, a carefully composed symphony of different single malt whiskies forms the firm and flavourful base. The grain whisky has a lighter and smoother character, beautifully balancing the intense and complex flavours.

Blended whisky by no means has to be inferior to a single malt, it is just a different kind of whisky.

Is Compass Box Art & Decadence a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

Yes, Compass Box Art & Decadence is a no age statement (NAS) whisky. But what exactly does that mean?

According to the rules, when an age is stated on the bottle, it must always be the youngest whisky in the blend and not the age that is the most represented percentage-wise in the blend. A producer will therefore consciously choose not to state an age on his bottle in two cases: when an old whisky is blended with a small proportion of younger whisky, or when young whisky is blended with a proportion of older whisky. In the first case, he does not want to put a young age on his bottle if his blend contains mainly older whisky, and in the second case, from a marketing point of view it is more interesting to go out with that particle of older whisky.

Is Compass Box Art & Decadence a single cask whisky?

No, Compass Box Art & Decadence is not a single cask whisky.

Is Compass Box Art & Decadence a whisky at cask strength?

No, Compass Box Art & Decadence is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Compass Box Art & Decadence suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Compass Box Art & Decadence is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Compass Box Art & Decadence might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Compass Box Art & Decadence a whisky to invest in?

Compass Box Art & Decadence is a whisky of Compass Box that was referred to by us as a Collector'swhisky. That is, we believe they have the most potential to increase in value over time.

Whether that will actually happen we obviously cannot predict. We therefore always advise never to invest or speculate in whisky that you would never want to drink yourself out of.

Is Compass Box Art & Decadence een goede keuze voor mij?

This Compass Box Art & Decadence can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a woody character. Indeed, this woodiness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as this is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Compass Box Art & Decadence a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Compass Box Art & Decadence whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Compass Box Art & Decadence a spicy whisky?

Yes, Compass Box Art & Decadence is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Compass Box Art & Decadence a fruity whisky?

Yes, Compass Box Art & Decadence is a whisky with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Compass Box Art & Decadence pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Compass Box Art & Decadence whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Compass Box Art & Decadence have a high alcohol content?

Compass Box Art & Decadence is not whisky for sissies. The alcohol content of this bottle is quite a bit above the 40% you usually whisky expect, so it's best to take into account that this one can come in solid.

Is Compass Box Art & Decadence an independent bottling?

Compass Box Art & Decadence is a whisky of the Compass Box brand bottled by the independent bottler Compass Box. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Compass Box Art & Decadence suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Compass Box Art & Decadence is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Compass Box Art & Decadence vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Compass Box Art & Decadence a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Compass Box Art & Decadence whisky from Compass Box is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
