Our buying advice for Glengoyne 2007 16y

The Glengoyne 2007 16y is a good choice for enthusiasts who enjoy the finer single cask whisky. This whisky comes from the Scottish Highland and was bottled at 52.5%.

Flavour notes

The aroma opens with elegant sherry, joined by greased leather, dry walnuts, brown sugar and a distinctly autumnal woodland impression.

On the palate it is lightly spicy, with a somewhat oily texture. Sherry lingers in soft layers, the nutty notes stay present, and there are impressions of autumn leaves and roasted pineapple. The finish is long and refined, moving from sherry to red fruit before returning to those familiar hints of nuts.

Product info about Glengoyne 2007 16y

Glengoyne 2007 16y is a Highland single malt shaped by one individual sherry-matured cask. Distilled in 2007 and bottled in 2023, it spent 16 years maturing before being released in a run of just 249 bottles. That gives it the feel of a precise cask selection rather than a broad, repeatable house expression.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, bottlings like this stand out because they give whisky drinkers something very specific to explore: a defined vintage, a clear age, sherry maturation and a firm 52.5% strength. The interest lies in that direct cask-driven character, where the whisky is tied closely to the individual vessel from which it came.

With only the last bottles remaining, the limited nature of this release becomes part of its appeal. Once a single cask like this is gone, that exact combination of Glengoyne spirit, sherry maturation and 16 years of development cannot simply be repeated.

About GLENGOYNE

Glengoyne, literally translated as valley of the wild geese, can be regarded as the odd duck, or shall we say goose, in the pond. The distillery was founded in 1833 under the name Burnfoot, later changed to Glen Guin, and finally became Glengoyne in 1905. With its unique location close to the famous West Highland Way north of Glasgow, the warehouses of Glengoyne are located in the Lowlands, but the stills themselves are just situated in the Highlands on the other side of the road. Somewhat special is the fact that Glengoyne works with 3 stills: 1 wash still and 2 spirit stills. This is no longer to produce triple distilled malt, as they have stopped doing that since 1886. The distillate is not peated and has a typically smooth, sweet, and fruity character.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Glengoyne 2007 16y?

Glengoyne 2007 16y is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Glengoyne 2007 16y a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Glengoyne 2007 16y is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Glengoyne 2007 16y a single cask whisky?

Yes, Glengoyne 2007 16y is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Glengoyne 2007 16y a whisky at cask strength?

No, Glengoyne 2007 16y is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Glengoyne 2007 16y suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Glengoyne 2007 16y is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Glengoyne 2007 16y might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Do you drink Glengoyne 2007 16y pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Glengoyne 2007 16y whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Glengoyne 2007 16y have a high alcohol content?

Whisky of more than 52% is rather rare. Often, such a high alcohol content is due to the fact that it is a cask strength whisky (a whisky cask strength): the whisky in that case is not diluted before bottling so it goes into the bottle at a higher alcohol content. Whisky with a high alcohol content often benefits from a few drops of water to release the aromas and make the alcohol less predominant in the glass, and in itself is also fine for use in stronger cocktails.

Is Glengoyne 2007 16y an independent bottling?

Glengoyne 2007 16y is a whisky of the Glengoyne brand bottled by the independent bottler Asta Morris. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Glengoyne 2007 16y suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Glengoyne 2007 16y is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Glengoyne 2007 16y vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Glengoyne 2007 16y a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Glengoyne 2007 16y whisky from Glengoyne is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
