The stated flavour profile points to a whisky built around fruit, spice and wood influence. These elements appear clearly present, giving the impression of a mature single malt where cask character and fruit-driven depth share the foreground.

Peat and salt are not part of the indicated profile, so the focus remains on maturation, gentle structure and the natural intensity of a cask strength bottling.

Product info about Glenburgie 1994 28y Gmp

Glenburgie 1994 28 Year Old Gordon & McPhail is a Speyside single malt with a very focused identity. Distilled in 1994 and bottled on 16 August 2023, it spent 28 years maturing before being released as part of Gordon & McPhail's Connoisseurs Choice range.

Its appeal lies in the narrowness of the selection. This is a single cask whisky drawn from one hogshead, bottled at cask strength at 52.3%, with only 179 bottles produced. Rather than presenting a broad house style, it captures one particular cask of Glenburgie after a long period of maturation.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, bottlings like this are valued for exactly that sense of specificity: a defined origin, a long age statement and a natural strength presentation. With the last bottles now available, the limited nature of this release is very much part of its story.

About GLENBURGIE

There have been traces of a distillery at the Glenburgie location since 1810, when it was still called Kilnflat. The name Glenburgie itself, however, only appears in official documents from 1871 onwards. In the 1920s and 1930s, a woman, Margaret Nichol, was in charge of the distillery; she is sometimes regarded as the first female distillery manager. In 1958, two Lomond stills were installed, the production of which was kept entirely separate from the rest of the distilled alcohol. That was sold under the name Glencraig until 1981, when the Lomond stills were replaced by regular stills. Much of the single malt from Glenburgie is intended for Ballantine's blends, but you will also find it in Old Smuggler.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Glenburgie 1994 28y Gmp?

Glenburgie 1994 28y Gmp is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Glenburgie 1994 28y Gmp a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Glenburgie 1994 28y Gmp is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Glenburgie 1994 28y Gmp a single cask whisky?

Yes, Glenburgie 1994 28y Gmp is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Glenburgie 1994 28y Gmp a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, Glenburgie 1994 28y Gmp is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is Glenburgie 1994 28y Gmp suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Glenburgie 1994 28y Gmp is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Glenburgie 1994 28y Gmp might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Glenburgie 1994 28y Gmp een goede keuze voor mij?

This Glenburgie 1994 28y Gmp can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a woody character. Indeed, this woodiness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as this is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Glenburgie 1994 28y Gmp a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Glenburgie 1994 28y Gmp whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Glenburgie 1994 28y Gmp a spicy whisky?

Yes, Glenburgie 1994 28y Gmp is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Glenburgie 1994 28y Gmp a fruity whisky?

Yes, Glenburgie 1994 28y Gmp is a whisky with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Glenburgie 1994 28y Gmp pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Glenburgie 1994 28y Gmp whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Glenburgie 1994 28y Gmp have a high alcohol content?

Whisky of more than 52% is rather rare. Often, such a high alcohol content is due to the fact that it is a cask strength whisky (a whisky cask strength): the whisky in that case is not diluted before bottling so it goes into the bottle at a higher alcohol content. Whisky with a high alcohol content often benefits from a few drops of water to release the aromas and make the alcohol less predominant in the glass, and in itself is also fine for use in stronger cocktails.

Is Glenburgie 1994 28y Gmp an independent bottling?

Glenburgie 1994 28y Gmp is a whisky of the Glenburgie brand bottled by the independent bottler Gordon & McPhail. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Glenburgie 1994 28y Gmp suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Glenburgie 1994 28y Gmp is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Glenburgie 1994 28y Gmp vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Glenburgie 1994 28y Gmp a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Glenburgie 1994 28y Gmp whisky from Glenburgie is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
