Our buying advice for Ruadh Maor 2010 13y

The Ruadh Maor 2010 13y is the perfect choice for enthusiasts who appreciate the finer single cask whisky. This whisky comes from the Scottish Highland and was bottled at a cask strength of no less than 57,1%. The price of this single cask whisky is somewhat higher, but the taste and quality make it more than worth it.

Flavour notes

The aroma opens with a savoury, smoky edge: grilled and smoked ham, campfire ash and a note reminiscent of fireworks. Dried fruit follows, adding a darker fruitiness behind the peat.

On the palate, peat smoke meets firm wood spice. Clove, new leather and rich fruitcake give it weight and depth, while the finish stays firmly smoky, with peat and a lingering ashy presence.

Product info about Ruadh Maor 2010 13y

Ruadh Maor 2010 13y shows a more unusual side of Glenturret. Ruadh Maor is the name used for the peated whisky made at the Highland distillery, while Glenturret mainly produces unpeated spirit. That contrast gives this bottling much of its appeal: it is a strongly peated single malt from a producer not defined solely by peat.

The whisky was selected and bottled by Berry Bros & Rudd as part of Berry's own selection. As an independent bottler with a drinks history dating back to 1698, Berry Bros & Rudd has a long tradition of choosing individual casks from across Scotland. This release comes from a single cask distilled in 2010, bottled in 2023 at 13 years old, and finished in an oloroso sherry butt.

Within the range at Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of bottle that stands out through concentration rather than polish. It was bottled at cask strength, 57.1%, with an outturn of 690 bottles, and the remaining stock is limited. The story here is clear: Highland peat, sherry butt depth and the directness of a single cask captured without dilution.

About GLENTURRET

Glenturret is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland. Whisky was already being made at this location on the banks of the Turret in 1775. For a very long time, the distillery was unique because it was the only one using a mash tun with an open top that was also stirred by hand. Since 2022, however, they have installed a modern semilauter tun. The distillery was furthermore for a long time mainly known as the home of the famous Famous Grouse blend. Since 2019 and the acquisition by the Lalique Group, however, the focus has shifted back to the single malt, which has been relaunched. It is also unique that a top restaurant has been installed in the distillery, which has even had a Michelin star since 2022.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Ruadh Maor 2010 13y?

Ruadh Maor 2010 13y is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Ruadh Maor 2010 13y a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Ruadh Maor 2010 13y is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Ruadh Maor 2010 13y a single cask whisky?

Yes, Ruadh Maor 2010 13y is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Ruadh Maor 2010 13y a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, Ruadh Maor 2010 13y is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is Ruadh Maor 2010 13y suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Ruadh Maor 2010 13y is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Ruadh Maor 2010 13y might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Do you drink Ruadh Maor 2010 13y pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Ruadh Maor 2010 13y whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Ruadh Maor 2010 13y have a high alcohol content?

Whisky of more than 52% is rather rare. Often, such a high alcohol content is due to the fact that it is a cask strength whisky (a whisky cask strength): the whisky in that case is not diluted before bottling so it goes into the bottle at a higher alcohol content. Whisky with a high alcohol content often benefits from a few drops of water to release the aromas and make the alcohol less predominant in the glass, and in itself is also fine for use in stronger cocktails.

Is Ruadh Maor 2010 13y an independent bottling?

Ruadh Maor 2010 13y is a whisky of the Glenturret brand bottled by the independent bottler Berry Bros. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Ruadh Maor 2010 13y suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Ruadh Maor 2010 13y is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Ruadh Maor 2010 13y vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Ruadh Maor 2010 13y a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Ruadh Maor 2010 13y whisky from Glenturret is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
