Our buying advice for Strathmill 2011 12y

The Strathmill 2011 12y is a good choice for enthusiasts who appreciate the finer single cask whisky. This whisky comes from the Scottish Speyside and was bottled at 51%.

Flavour notes

The aroma starts with bright citrus, soft oak and a gentle tropical note. Vanilla runs through it in elegant layers, giving the nose a smooth and polished feel.

On the palate there is a light peppery touch, followed by a pleasantly creamy texture. The refined fruitiness stays present while the Strathmill spirit remains clearly in focus. The finish is warming, with more vanilla and a stronger tropical fruit note lingering at the end.

Product info about Strathmill 2011 12y

Strathmill 2011 12y is a Speyside single malt with a very clear sense of place and cask. Drawn from a single Bourbon Barrel and bottled at 51%, it is not a broad house-style release, but a snapshot of one individual barrel. With only 286 bottles produced, it has the intimacy that makes single cask whisky so appealing.

The bourbon barrel maturation supports the spirit with vanilla, gentle oak and a bright fruit-driven line. Citrus and tropical notes give it lift, while the strength adds presence without making the whisky feel heavy. It is a Strathmill where refinement matters more than volume.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of bottle we like to introduce to customers who enjoy discovering limited Speyside bottlings with a clear cask identity. As these are the last bottles, it also has that extra sense of being a small release worth paying attention to.

About STRATHMILL

Strathmill is one of the three distilleries in the town of Keith in Morayshire. It is a distillery owned by Diageo and in the past it mainly produced single malt whisky for the house blends of this group. In recent years, mainly gin has been produced and it remains to be seen whether the production of single malt whisky will be restarted in the future. The site was originally a maïze mill and was converted into a distillery in 1891. At that time, the name was still Glenisla-Glenlivet, but when gin producer W&A Gilbey bought the site in 1895, he changed the name to Strathmill.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Strathmill 2011 12y?

Strathmill 2011 12y is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Strathmill 2011 12y a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Strathmill 2011 12y is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Strathmill 2011 12y a single cask whisky?

Yes, Strathmill 2011 12y is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Strathmill 2011 12y a whisky at cask strength?

No, Strathmill 2011 12y is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Strathmill 2011 12y suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Strathmill 2011 12y is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Strathmill 2011 12y might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Do you drink Strathmill 2011 12y pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Strathmill 2011 12y whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Strathmill 2011 12y have a high alcohol content?

Strathmill 2011 12y is not whisky for sissies. The alcohol content of this bottle is quite a bit above the 40% you usually whisky expect, so it's best to take into account that this one can come in solid.

Is Strathmill 2011 12y an independent bottling?

Strathmill 2011 12y is a whisky of the Strathmill brand bottled by the independent bottler Asta Morris. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Strathmill 2011 12y suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Strathmill 2011 12y is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Strathmill 2011 12y vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Strathmill 2011 12y a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Strathmill 2011 12y whisky from Strathmill is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
