Flavour notes

The aroma opens with a very buttery impression, joined by cognac, brandy snaps and banana. It gives the whisky a rounded, slightly dessert-like start.

On the palate, chamomile tea, orange peel, milk chocolate and cardamom bring a more spiced and delicate side. The finish moves into a savoury-sweet register, with pretzels, salted bread, caramelised brown sugar and a hint of cola lingering at the end.

Product info about Tomatin 2009 16y

Tomatin 2009 16y is a Highland single malt with a distinctive twist. Distilled in 2009 and matured for 16 years, it has been finished in Manzanilla casks since 2020, bringing together buttery notes, citrus, spice and a gentle saline edge.

As part of Cadenhead's Original Collection, this Tomatin has the feel of a whisky where the cask finish adds a meaningful extra layer. The fruity and spiced sides are clearly present, while the Manzanilla influence gives the whisky a slightly savoury, more individual direction.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see this as the kind of bottling that rewards a closer look, especially for drinkers interested in Highland single malt with a less conventional cask story. With the last bottles now in sight, it also carries that sense of a release that will not remain on the shelf indefinitely.

About TOMATIN

At a certain point in the 1970s, Tomatin was the largest distillery in Scotland. The capacity of no less than 12 million liters has since been reduced to around 5 million liters per year, due to declining whisky sales between 1980-2000. In the first decade of the 21st century, the distillery started to grow again, partly because they shifted their focus from production for blends to the creation of single malt whisky. Today, as much as 65% of their production is intended for single malt, which is quite a lot. Remarkably, Tomatin uses very long fermentation periods: fermentation there lasts at least 168 hours!

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Tomatin 2009 16y?

Tomatin 2009 16y is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Tomatin 2009 16y a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Tomatin 2009 16y is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Tomatin 2009 16y a single cask whisky?

No, Tomatin 2009 16y is not a single cask whisky.

Is Tomatin 2009 16y a whisky at cask strength?

No, Tomatin 2009 16y is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Tomatin 2009 16y suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Tomatin 2009 16y is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Tomatin 2009 16y might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Tomatin 2009 16y een goede keuze voor mij?

This Tomatin 2009 16y can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a spicy character. Indeed, this spiciness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as it is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Tomatin 2009 16y a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Tomatin 2009 16y whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Tomatin 2009 16y a spicy whisky?

Yes, Tomatin 2009 16y is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Tomatin 2009 16y a fruity whisky?

Yes, Tomatin 2009 16y is a whisky with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Tomatin 2009 16y pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Tomatin 2009 16y whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Tomatin 2009 16y have a high alcohol content?

The alcohol content of this Tomatin 2009 16y is higher than what you would expect from an average whisky expect. While not extremely exceptional, a whisky of around 46% is somewhat rarer anyway. Most whisky is usually closer to 40%.

Is Tomatin 2009 16y an independent bottling?

Tomatin 2009 16y is a whisky of the Tomatin brand bottled by the independent bottler Cadenhead. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Tomatin 2009 16y suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Tomatin 2009 16y is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Tomatin 2009 16y vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Tomatin 2009 16y a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Tomatin 2009 16y whisky from Tomatin is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
