Flavour notes

The aroma is bright, with caramelised orange peel, apricot jam on toast and a lower note of caramel and cloudy honey. Dry cinnamon adds a clear spicy edge while leaving the softer elements intact.

On the palate, light caramel and chamomile are joined by hazelnuts and stewed peach. Mace, cinnamon and toasted almonds gradually come forward. The finish is harmonious, carrying caramel, chamomile and toasted almond through to a final spicy hint of mace and cinnamon.

Product info about Macduff 2014 11y

Macduff 2014 11y is a Highland single malt from Banffshire, built from four refill bourbon casks. As a Small Batch release, it has a clear sense of focus: one distillation year, eleven years of maturation and a cask style that supports the whisky rather than covering it.

The supplied information presents Macduff as a distillery known for delicate, harmonious flavours, reflecting its scenic coastal setting. In this bottling that comes across as a refined Highland style, with spice taking the lead and lighter fruit and floral notes adding detail around it.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of release we would point out to someone looking for a whisky with transparency and a measured cask influence. The refill bourbon maturation keeps the distillate in view, while bottling at 48%, without chill filtration or added colouring, helps preserve its natural expression. With the last bottles now available, this small batch is gradually leaving the shelves.

About MACDUFF

Macduff is a Scottish whisky that takes its name from the distillery of the same name in the northeastern Highland region, close to the coastal town of Banff. The distillery was founded in 1960 and is also known under the brand name Glen Deveron, under which a large portion of the single malts is sold internationally. Macduff is part of the portfolio of John Dewar & Sons, in turn owned by Bacardi. The majority of the whisky produced is destined for blended whiskys, especially for brands like William Lawson's, but a smaller portion is released as single malt. The whisky is often characterized by a relatively smooth character, with light fruit notes and subtle influences from the coastal area around the distillery. Macduff uses a combination of traditional and more modern distilling methods, including a unique stillhouse with curved lyne arms, which contributes to the character of the spirit. The distillery offers a varied range of bottlings, some bearing age statements, usually between 10 and 21 years. Although Macduff is less well-known to the general public than some other Highland distilleries, the single malt is appreciated by enthusiasts for its accessible style and lightly fruity profile.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Macduff 2014 11y?

Macduff 2014 11y is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Macduff 2014 11y a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Macduff 2014 11y is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Macduff 2014 11y a single cask whisky?

No, Macduff 2014 11y is not a single cask whisky.

Is Macduff 2014 11y a whisky at cask strength?

No, Macduff 2014 11y is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Macduff 2014 11y suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Macduff 2014 11y is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Macduff 2014 11y might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Macduff 2014 11y een goede keuze voor mij?

This Macduff 2014 11y can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a spicy character. Indeed, this spiciness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as it is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Macduff 2014 11y a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Macduff 2014 11y whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Macduff 2014 11y a spicy whisky?

Yes, Macduff 2014 11y is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Macduff 2014 11y a fruity whisky?

On its own, yes, but Macduff 2014 11y is a whisky with only a slightly fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky is hidden in the flavour profile, balanced with the other parts of the profile.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Macduff 2014 11y pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Macduff 2014 11y whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Macduff 2014 11y have a high alcohol content?

The alcohol content of this Macduff 2014 11y is higher than what you would expect from an average whisky expect. While not extremely exceptional, a whisky of around 46% is somewhat rarer anyway. Most whisky is usually closer to 40%.

Is Macduff 2014 11y an independent bottling?

Macduff 2014 11y is a whisky of the Macduff brand bottled by the independent bottler The Single Malts of Scotland. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Macduff 2014 11y suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Macduff 2014 11y is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Macduff 2014 11y a biological whisky?

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
