Product info about Glencadam 1996 27y

Glencadam 1996 27y is a Highland single malt built around patience and maturity. Distilled in 1996 and bottled after 27 years, it speaks more through depth and development than through force, with a style that stays away from peat and lets the mature whisky do the talking.

Its maturation started in bourbon casks before receiving a finish in Oloroso sherry casks from Jerez. That final stage adds richness and darker layers, bringing the fruit, spice, chocolate and nutty notes further forward. Bottled at 46%, it keeps a composed strength that suits the whisky's age and layered character.

Only 1691 bottles were released, giving this Glencadam a clear sense of limitation. At Drankenshop Broekmans, it is the kind of bottle we would introduce to someone looking for an older single malt with sherry depth, gentle spice and no smoky distraction.

The aroma opens with praline, caramelised almonds and cocoa powder, followed by stewed fruit, Manuka honey and a soft touch of cinnamon.

On the palate, Swiss chocolate and warm butterscotch come through first, joined by raisins, light tobacco, spiced apple and warm wood tones. The finish carries date, chocolate cake, espresso and roasted nuts.

About GLENCADAM

While many of the Scottish distilleries are owned by large companies, there are also exceptions such as Glencadam. Along with Tomintoul, Glencadam is still owned by a family business - Angus Dundee Distillers. Glencadam is one of the few distilleries left in the Eastern Highlands between Dundee and Aberdeen. In 2022, construction began on a visitor center, which will certainly help increase the distillery's fame in the future.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Glencadam 1996 27y?

Glencadam 1996 27y is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Glencadam 1996 27y a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Glencadam 1996 27y is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Glencadam 1996 27y a single cask whisky?

No, Glencadam 1996 27y is not a single cask whisky.

Is Glencadam 1996 27y a whisky at cask strength?

No, Glencadam 1996 27y is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Glencadam 1996 27y suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Glencadam 1996 27y is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Glencadam 1996 27y might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Glencadam 1996 27y een goede keuze voor mij?

This Glencadam 1996 27y can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a spicy character. Indeed, this spiciness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as it is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Glencadam 1996 27y a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Glencadam 1996 27y whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Glencadam 1996 27y a spicy whisky?

Yes, Glencadam 1996 27y is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Glencadam 1996 27y a fruity whisky?

Yes, Glencadam 1996 27y is a whisky with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Glencadam 1996 27y pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Glencadam 1996 27y whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Glencadam 1996 27y have a high alcohol content?

The alcohol content of this Glencadam 1996 27y is higher than what you would expect from an average whisky expect. While not extremely exceptional, a whisky of around 46% is somewhat rarer anyway. Most whisky is usually closer to 40%.

Is Glencadam 1996 27y an independent bottling?

No, Glencadam 1996 27y is an official bottling of Glencadam.

Is Glencadam 1996 27y suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Glencadam 1996 27y is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
