Our buying advice for Glendronach 40 Years

The Glendronach 40 Years is the perfect choice for enthusiasts who enjoy an exclusive single malt whisky. This whisky comes from the Scottish Highland and was bottled at 43.9%. This powerful and intensely spicy whisky requires a developed palate. We advise beginners not to start with this type of whisky because the profile can be too overwhelming. The price of this single malt whisky is somewhat higher, but the taste and quality make it more than worth it.

Product info about Glendronach 40 Years

Glendronach 40 Years is a Highland single malt shaped by long ageing and sherry cask maturation. Four decades give it a mature, contemplative style, built around dark fruit, spice and a well-developed wood influence.

The appeal here lies in the depth of the sherry-matured character. Black cherry, plum, blackberry, chocolate and coffee notes place it firmly in the richer side of Glendronach's tradition, with spice adding structure rather than just warmth.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of whisky we would introduce slowly rather than rush through: a 40-year-old single malt bottled at 43.9%, made for drinkers who appreciate mature Highland whisky with real depth.

The aroma brings black cherry, stewed plum and blackberry, supported by chocolate cake and an aromatic coffee note. On the palate it builds with blackcurrant, blackberry compote, plum and raisins, woven together with soft cinnamon and chocolate espresso.

The finish is elegant and deep, leaving a silky, lasting impression.

About GLENDRONACH

Glendronach literally means, in Gaelic, 'Valley of Blackberries'. A fairy-tale name for a distillery with a lot of history, a special aura and, above all, memorable whisky. Glendronach was founded in 1826 by James Allardice. Today, it is known as one of the leading producers of Scotch whisky matured in sherry casks. Glendronach was closed for a while between 1996 and 2002 and things were not looking good for its future. A series of acquisitions saw it join a group that also included Benriach and Glenglassaugh, led by Billy Walker. That revived the brand and built it into a crowd favourite, with legendary bottlings. In 2016, the group came into the hands of Brown Forman, the US company that also heads Jack Daniel's and Woodford's bourbons, among others. This promises a bright future for the three single malt distilleries, which will have a strong partner for more growth globally.

Glendronach's main focus, however, remains the creation of beautiful whiskies. The hand of Rachel Barrie, the new master blender, is clear. With great expertise, she selects the casks used to compose Glendronach's base range and manages to keep quality high year after year. Work is also currently underway to significantly expand production capacity to produce even more quality spirit in the future.

Flagship on offer is the 12yo, aged exclusively in a combination of oloroso and PX sherry casks. Then there are also the 15yo, the 18yo and the 21yo to discover, and regularly limited official bottlings such as the Cask Strength and the Grandeur.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Glendronach 40 Years?

Glendronach 40 Years is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Glendronach 40 Years a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Glendronach 40 Years is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Glendronach 40 Years a single cask whisky?

No, Glendronach 40 Years is not a single cask whisky.

Is Glendronach 40 Years a whisky at cask strength?

No, Glendronach 40 Years is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Glendronach 40 Years suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Glendronach 40 Years is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Glendronach 40 Years might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Glendronach 40 Years een goede keuze voor mij?

This Glendronach 40 Years can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a woody character. Indeed, this woodiness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as this is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Glendronach 40 Years a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Glendronach 40 Years whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Glendronach 40 Years a spicy whisky?

Yes, Glendronach 40 Years is a whisky with an intensely spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Glendronach 40 Years a fruity whisky?

Yes, Glendronach 40 Years is a whisky with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Glendronach 40 Years pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Glendronach 40 Years whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Glendronach 40 Years have a high alcohol content?

The alcohol content of this Glendronach 40 Years is higher than what you would expect from an average whisky expect. While not extremely exceptional, a whisky of around 46% is somewhat rarer anyway. Most whisky is usually closer to 40%.

Is Glendronach 40 Years an independent bottling?

No, Glendronach 40 Years is an official bottling of Glendronach.

Is Glendronach 40 Years suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Glendronach 40 Years is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Glendronach 40 Years vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
