Flavour notes

The aroma starts fresh and fruit-driven, with Williams pear, candied pineapple and white peach. Beneath that come acacia honey, sweet vanilla and a subtle spicy note reminiscent of fresh hay.

On the palate it feels silky and sweet, showing soft caramel, sweet malt and exotic fruit in the direction of mango. Gentle spice adds warmth, with cinnamon giving a light, rounded accent.

The finish is medium in length and notably well balanced. Sweet fruit lingers, joined by a pleasant touch of light bitterness that recalls the crust of spiced breakfast cake.

Product info about Fettercairn Vanguard Collection

Fettercairn Vanguard Collection is built around one of the most engaging sides of Highland single malt: the way maturation shapes the distillery spirit. Fettercairn sits at the foot of the Cairngorms, and the limited Vanguard Series explores how different finishing casks can highlight new nuances in that spirit.

Rather than relying on an age statement as its main message, this release draws attention to the cask story. Distilled on 28 February 2008 and bottled at 46.3%, it brings together a clearly present floral side, wood influence and gentle spice, with fruit adding lift and freshness.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of Fettercairn we like to introduce when someone wants to taste a whisky shaped by maturation without moving into smoky territory. It has an exploratory feel, yet remains firmly connected to traditional Scottish craftsmanship.

About FETTERCAIRN

Fettercairn is an unusual distillery, which is really known to too few people. It was founded in 1824 in the village of Laurencekirk, in the east of Scotland near Aberdeen. For a long time, they made almost only single malts for parent company Whyte & Mackay's blends, but that changed in 2018, when it was decided to invest in official single malt bottlings again. The 12yo was the first of these, and a particularly fine example of a whisky that balances flavour, individual character and budget.

Fettercairn is unique in terms of its production process. It is the only distillery in the world to have installed a 'cooling ring' on the outside of its stills. This allows the boilers to cool along the outside during firing by running cold water over them. The purpose of this, despite the fact that their shape and size would basically allow them to produce mainly robust spirit, is to achieve a lighter and fruitier element. They are so proud of their cooling rings at Fettercairn that they even chose to incorporate them into the design of their bottles - you can see an embossed ring at the top of the bottle, and the water also appears to run down the bottle in relief.

At Fettercairn, they also dare to choose to experiment - especially in terms of wood maturation, they are ahead of their time and are working with special types of wood, spearheading, for example, a major project to plant Scottish oak and use it for casks. This is already producing exciting one-off and limited expressions, including in the Warehouse range and for the annual 16yo bottlings.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Fettercairn Vanguard Collection?

Fettercairn Vanguard Collection is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Fettercairn Vanguard Collection a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

Yes, Fettercairn Vanguard Collection is a no age statement (NAS) whisky. But what exactly does that mean?

According to the rules, when an age is stated on the bottle, it must always be the youngest whisky in the blend and not the age that is the most represented percentage-wise in the blend. A producer will therefore consciously choose not to state an age on his bottle in two cases: when an old whisky is blended with a small proportion of younger whisky, or when young whisky is blended with a proportion of older whisky. In the first case, he does not want to put a young age on his bottle if his blend contains mainly older whisky, and in the second case, from a marketing point of view it is more interesting to go out with that particle of older whisky.

Is Fettercairn Vanguard Collection a single cask whisky?

No, Fettercairn Vanguard Collection is not a single cask whisky.

Is Fettercairn Vanguard Collection a whisky at cask strength?

No, Fettercairn Vanguard Collection is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Fettercairn Vanguard Collection suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Fettercairn Vanguard Collection is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Fettercairn Vanguard Collection might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Fettercairn Vanguard Collection een goede keuze voor mij?

This Fettercairn Vanguard Collection can be a whisky one that suits you if you like a whisky with a floral character. Indeed, this florality is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also look at the rest of the flavour profile, as this florality is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Fettercairn Vanguard Collection a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Fettercairn Vanguard Collection whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Fettercairn Vanguard Collection a spicy whisky?

Yes, Fettercairn Vanguard Collection is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Fettercairn Vanguard Collection a fruity whisky?

On its own, yes, but Fettercairn Vanguard Collection is a whisky with only a slightly fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky is hidden in the flavour profile, balanced with the other parts of the profile.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Fettercairn Vanguard Collection pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Fettercairn Vanguard Collection whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Fettercairn Vanguard Collection have a high alcohol content?

The alcohol content of this Fettercairn Vanguard Collection is higher than what you would expect from an average whisky expect. While not extremely exceptional, a whisky of around 46% is somewhat rarer anyway. Most whisky is usually closer to 40%.

Is Fettercairn Vanguard Collection an independent bottling?

No, Fettercairn Vanguard Collection is an official bottling of Fettercairn.

Is Fettercairn Vanguard Collection suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Fettercairn Vanguard Collection is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Fettercairn Vanguard Collection vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Fettercairn Vanguard Collection a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Fettercairn Vanguard Collection whisky from Fettercairn is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
