Flavour notes

The flavour profile is balanced and relatively restrained rather than heavily pronounced. Wood, soft spice, fruit and a light floral touch are all present, with no single element dominating the whole.

Ageing in American Oak gives the bourbon a clear wood-driven foundation, supported by gentle spicy and fruity accents. Peat smoke and salty notes are not part of the profile, keeping the style clean and direct.

Product info about Jim Beam Black 7y

Jim Beam Black 7y shows a more mature side of American bourbon. With 7 years of ageing in American Oak and a strength of 45%, it carries a little more depth and presence than a very light, entry-level bourbon.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, it sits comfortably among bourbons that feel familiar yet offer a more developed drinking experience. Jim Beam is a well-known name, but the Black 7y places the emphasis on extra maturation rather than bold extremes.

The profile is evenly composed, with gentle wood influence, soft spice, a touch of fruit and a subtle floral note. It is a bourbon with structure and clarity, without peat smoke or salty notes taking the lead.

About JIM BEAM

Jim Beam is more than 200 years old and the history spans seven generations. In 1740, the Boehm family arrived in the USA. By the end of the 18th century, they moved to Kentucky and changed their name to Beam. The climate and the surroundings were suitable for growing maïs. Surplus maïs from the harvest was distilled into whiskey according to an old family recipe. The first barrel, then still under the name Old Jake Beam Sour Mash, was sold in 1795 and soon became a local favorite. The name Jim Beam was introduced in 1943, to honor James B. Beam, who rebuilt the family business after the disastrous years of Prohibition.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Jim Beam Black 7y?

Bourbon can be produced anywhere in the United States. It is distilled with at least 51% corn, supplemented by other grains such as rye, wheat and malted barley.

Bourbon can be bottled almost immediately after distillation, but straight bourbon must be aged for a minimum of two years in newly roasted oak barrels. In practice, this actually rarely happens, as a minimum maturation of four years is needed for a deliciously drinkable bourbon.

Kentucky is the birthplace of bourbon and American whiskey in general.

Is Jim Beam Black 7y a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Jim Beam Black 7y is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Jim Beam Black 7y a single cask whisky?

No, Jim Beam Black 7y is not a single cask whisky.

Is Jim Beam Black 7y a whisky at cask strength?

No, Jim Beam Black 7y is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Jim Beam Black 7y suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Jim Beam Black 7y is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Jim Beam Black 7y might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Jim Beam Black 7y a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Jim Beam Black 7y whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Jim Beam Black 7y a spicy whisky?

On its own, yes, but this Jim Beam Black 7y is one whisky with only a slightly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky is not emphatic in the flavour profile, but it is there.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Jim Beam Black 7y a fruity whisky?

On its own, yes, but Jim Beam Black 7y is a whisky with only a slightly fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky is hidden in the flavour profile, balanced with the other parts of the profile.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Jim Beam Black 7y pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Jim Beam Black 7y whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Jim Beam Black 7y have a high alcohol content?

The alcohol content of this Jim Beam Black 7y is higher than what you would expect from an average whisky expect. While not extremely exceptional, a whisky of around 46% is somewhat rarer anyway. Most whisky is usually closer to 40%.

Is Jim Beam Black 7y an independent bottling?

No, Jim Beam Black 7y is an official bottling of Jim Beam.

Is Jim Beam Black 7y suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Jim Beam Black 7y is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from United States it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Jim Beam Black 7y vegan?
