Flavour notes

The flavour profile is led by fruit and spice. The Oloroso Sherry cask supports that direction without making wood the dominant feature; oak is present, but it remains in the background.

A lighter floral note adds some lift to the firm cask-strength presentation at 54.6%. Peat and salt are not part of the profile here, keeping the focus clearly on fruit, spice and sherry-cask maturation.

Product info about Knockando 2010 15y #2

Knockando 2010 15y #2 is a Speyside single malt with a very defined identity: one distillation year, one individual cask and bottling at cask strength. Released by Signatory as part of the Cask Collection, it puts the focus on the personality of a single Oloroso Sherry cask rather than on a broader house-style composition.

Distilled in 2010 and bottled after 15 years, it comes in at 54.6% alcohol. That strength gives the whisky a firm, direct presence, while the Oloroso Sherry cask frames the style. The supplied flavour profile points clearly towards fruit and spice, with wood and floral notes playing a lighter supporting role.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of bottling we like to explain rather than simply list: Speyside origin, Knockando distillate, Signatory selection, single cask character and the last bottles now remaining. Its appeal lies in that clarity and limited nature.

About KNOCKANDO

Knockando is a Scottish single malt whisky from the Speyside region, and is produced at the eponymous Knockando Distillery. The distillery is located near the village of Knockando, a name that comes from Gaelic and can be freely translated as small black hillock. Since its founding in 1898, the distillery has been almost continuously active and is known for its relatively light, elegant style with fruity and floral notes. Knockando usually bottles its whisky as single malt at cask strength without the addition of artificial colorings, which is appreciated by enthusiasts who want to taste the pure expression of the distillate. The whisky generally matures in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, resulting in a subtle and balanced character. The brand is part of the portfolio of Diageo, one of the largest drinks companies in the world, making Knockando widely available globally. Knockando is also known for the fact that almost all bottlings carry a vintage year, which contributes to the transparent character of the brand. To this day, Knockando remains popular with enthusiasts of accessible, classic Speyside whisky.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Knockando 2010 15y #2?

Knockando 2010 15y #2 is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Knockando 2010 15y #2 a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Knockando 2010 15y #2 is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Knockando 2010 15y #2 a single cask whisky?

Yes, Knockando 2010 15y #2 is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Knockando 2010 15y #2 a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, Knockando 2010 15y #2 is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is Knockando 2010 15y #2 suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Knockando 2010 15y #2 is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Knockando 2010 15y #2 might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Knockando 2010 15y #2 een goede keuze voor mij?

This Knockando 2010 15y #2 can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a spicy character. Indeed, this spiciness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as it is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Knockando 2010 15y #2 a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Knockando 2010 15y #2 whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Knockando 2010 15y #2 a spicy whisky?

Yes, Knockando 2010 15y #2 is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Knockando 2010 15y #2 a fruity whisky?

Yes, Knockando 2010 15y #2 is a whisky with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Knockando 2010 15y #2 pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Knockando 2010 15y #2 whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Knockando 2010 15y #2 have a high alcohol content?

Whisky of more than 52% is rather rare. Often, such a high alcohol content is due to the fact that it is a cask strength whisky (a whisky cask strength): the whisky in that case is not diluted before bottling so it goes into the bottle at a higher alcohol content. Whisky with a high alcohol content often benefits from a few drops of water to release the aromas and make the alcohol less predominant in the glass, and in itself is also fine for use in stronger cocktails.

Is Knockando 2010 15y #2 an independent bottling?

Knockando 2010 15y #2 is a whisky of the Knockando brand bottled by the independent bottler Signatory. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Knockando 2010 15y #2 suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Knockando 2010 15y #2 is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Knockando 2010 15y #2 vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Knockando 2010 15y #2 a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Knockando 2010 15y #2 whisky from Knockando is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
