Product info about North British 1991 35y

North British 1991 35y from Watt Whisky is a rare look at mature Scottish grain whisky with real age behind it. Distilled in 1991 and bottled after 35 years, it comes from the Lowland region and shows the more elegant, patiently developed side of this style.

Drawn from a single sherry butt and bottled at cask strength at 48.3%, this is a very focused release: one cask, one long maturation, and only 126 bottles. With the last bottles now remaining, its limited nature is part of the story without needing to be overstated.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this bottling stands out for the way it combines maturity with a soft, creamy and spiced profile. The partially active butt seems to support the whisky rather than overpower it, allowing fruit, gentle sweetness and warm spice to come through with quiet confidence.

The aroma is rich and inviting, with apple pie, panna cotta, clove and star anise, alongside an elegant sweet patisserie note.

On the palate it feels full and creamy, bringing white pepper, gentle spice, vanilla cream and stewed fruit. The finish is long and refined, with warm pastry, vanilla and delicate spices lingering softly.

About NORTH BRITISH

North British is a name that is mainly known within the Scottish whisky industry as a producer of grain whisky. The North British Distillery is located in Edinburgh and was founded in 1885 as a collaboration between several whisky merchants, including Andrew Usher, John Watson, and William Sanderson. The distillery produces almost exclusively grain whisky, a style in which a mix of grains, usually including corn and wheat, is used and the whisky is generally distilled in column stills. North British whisky is for the most part supplied as a blend component to various well-known whisky brands, and is only rarely bottled as single grain under its own name. For this reason, you mostly encounter North British through independent bottlers, often at respectable ages and with varying maturation. The character of North British is usually soft, light, and accessible, making it a valued base for blended Scotch whisky. North British currently belongs to a joint venture between Diageo and The Edrington Group and has an important role within the Scottish whisky sector as one of the larger and oldest active grain distilleries.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is North British 1991 35y?

North British 1991 35y is a grain whisky .

Grain whisky is made from a grain other than barley, such as wheat and/or maize. It is distilled in fairly large-scale column stills, also known as distillery columns.

As with malt whisky, in this category you also have 'single grain' whisky that comes from just one distillery, and 'blended' whisky that comes from multiple distilleries. Both variants are not very common.

Is North British 1991 35y a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, North British 1991 35y is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is North British 1991 35y a single cask whisky?

Yes, North British 1991 35y is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is North British 1991 35y a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, North British 1991 35y is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is North British 1991 35y suitable to give as a gift?

Although this North British 1991 35y is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one North British 1991 35y might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is North British 1991 35y een goede keuze voor mij?

This North British 1991 35y can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a spicy character. Indeed, this spiciness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as it is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is North British 1991 35y a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this North British 1991 35y whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is North British 1991 35y a spicy whisky?

Yes, North British 1991 35y is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is North British 1991 35y a fruity whisky?

Yes, North British 1991 35y is a whisky with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink North British 1991 35y pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this North British 1991 35y whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does North British 1991 35y have a high alcohol content?

North British 1991 35y is not whisky for sissies. The alcohol content of this bottle is quite a bit above the 40% you usually whisky expect, so it's best to take into account that this one can come in solid.

Is North British 1991 35y an independent bottling?

North British 1991 35y is a whisky of the North British brand bottled by the independent bottler Campbeltown Whisky Company. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is North British 1991 35y suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This North British 1991 35y is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is North British 1991 35y a biological whisky?

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
