Flavour notes

The aroma begins with earthy peat, wet fern and scorched herbs. Wildflower honey, malty barley, fresh apple peel and roasted meat then add extra layers, making the nose broad and immediately distinctive.

On the palate the whisky turns darker, with charcoal, scorched twigs and firm peat at the centre. Its natural cask strength gives real presence, while a lingering sweetness softens the sharper, charred edges.

Product info about Ruadh Mhor 2011 14y

Ruadh Mhor 2011 14y is a Highland single malt with a very clear sense of identity. The name means Big Red in Gaelic and refers to the heavily peated spirit made at Glenturret. In this Berry Bros. & Rudd release, peat takes the lead, yet there is a sweeter foundation underneath that gives the whisky more shape than raw intensity alone.

Drawn from cask #284, a sherry hogshead, this 14-year-old single cask was bottled at cask strength at 60.6%. Only 282 bottles were produced, placing it firmly among the more limited releases in the Berry Bros Odyssey Range. At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see this as the kind of bottle that rewards drinkers who enjoy individual cask character and a bold, unpolished presentation.

What makes it stand out is the way earthy peat, charred tones and lasting sweetness sit together. It is assertive from the start, but there is enough detail in the glass to make it more than just a powerful dram.

About UNDISCLOSED

Undisclosed whisky from Scotland generally refers to Scotch whiskies for which the specific distillery of origin is not made public. This type of bottling is popular among independent bottlers who purchase casks from various distilleries and release them under their own label. In many cases, the choice is made on purpose not to mention the origin, for example due to contractual agreements with the distillery or to focus on the tasting experience instead of the name. Although the exact place of production and details about the maturation are often not shared, the contents always comply with the strict Scottish regulations for whisky, which among other things means that it has matured for at least three years in oak casks in Scotland. These kinds of bottlings are loved by adventurous whisky enthusiasts who like to be surprised by the versatility and character of Scotch whisky, without preconceived expectations about the house of origin. Undisclosed whiskies can be either single malt or blended and often offer a more interesting price tag than comparable bottlings with a well-known name.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Ruadh Mhor 2011 14y?

Ruadh Mhor 2011 14y is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Ruadh Mhor 2011 14y a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Ruadh Mhor 2011 14y is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Ruadh Mhor 2011 14y a single cask whisky?

Yes, Ruadh Mhor 2011 14y is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Ruadh Mhor 2011 14y a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, Ruadh Mhor 2011 14y is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is Ruadh Mhor 2011 14y suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Ruadh Mhor 2011 14y is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Ruadh Mhor 2011 14y might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Ruadh Mhor 2011 14y a tarred whisky?

On its own, yes, but Ruadh Mhor 2011 14y is one whisky in which the smokiness is only very slightly present in the flavour profile. So you will find some peatiness in it, but it is balanced with the rest and does not take over.

Peat is a typical flavour associated with a particular type of whisky. It is a flavour you have to (learn to) love. A whisky like this one, which is only mildly peated, is a great stepping stone to get acquainted with this flavour type.

Is Ruadh Mhor 2011 14y a spicy whisky?

On its own, yes, but this Ruadh Mhor 2011 14y is one whisky with only a slightly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky is not emphatic in the flavour profile, but it is there.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Ruadh Mhor 2011 14y a fruity whisky?

On its own, yes, but Ruadh Mhor 2011 14y is a whisky with only a slightly fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky is hidden in the flavour profile, balanced with the other parts of the profile.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Ruadh Mhor 2011 14y pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Ruadh Mhor 2011 14y whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Ruadh Mhor 2011 14y have a high alcohol content?

Whisky of more than 52% is rather rare. Often, such a high alcohol content is due to the fact that it is a cask strength whisky (a whisky cask strength): the whisky in that case is not diluted before bottling so it goes into the bottle at a higher alcohol content. Whisky with a high alcohol content often benefits from a few drops of water to release the aromas and make the alcohol less predominant in the glass, and in itself is also fine for use in stronger cocktails.

Is Ruadh Mhor 2011 14y an independent bottling?

Ruadh Mhor 2011 14y is a whisky of the Undisclosed brand bottled by the independent bottler Berry Bros. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Ruadh Mhor 2011 14y suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Ruadh Mhor 2011 14y is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Ruadh Mhor 2011 14y vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Ruadh Mhor 2011 14y a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Ruadh Mhor 2011 14y whisky from Undisclosed is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
