Our buying advice for Glenlochy 1980 35y Sigrare

The Glenlochy 1980 35y Sigrare is the perfect choice for enthusiasts who love an exclusive single cask whisky. This whisky comes from the Scottish Highland and was bottled at a cask strength of no less than 48%. This powerful and intensely fruity whisky requires a developed palate. We do not recommend beginners to start with this type of whisky as the profile can be too overwhelming. The price of this single cask whisky is somewhat higher, but the taste and quality more than justify this.

Flavour notes

The profile is led by fruit, with wood and spice clearly shaping the whisky around it. Its 35 years of maturation and single cask origin give the tasting experience a mature, concentrated feel.

Peat and salinity are not defining elements here, so the focus stays on fruit, cask structure and spice. The finish follows that same direction, with wood and spice carrying alongside the fruit rather than overwhelming it.

Product info about Glenlochy 1980 35y Sigrare

Glenlochy 1980 35y Sigrare is a whisky built around time, restraint and a very small-scale release. Distilled on 6 November 1980 and bottled on 2 December 2015, this Highland single malt spent 35 years maturing before being released by Signatory as part of the Rare Reserve series.

Its appeal lies in the detail. This is a single cask whisky from a hogshead, bottled at cask strength at 48%, with only 71 bottles drawn in total. Rather than presenting a broad house style, it captures one individual cask at one particular point in its life.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, bottles like this are valued for that sense of specificity. The profile points towards a fruit-led whisky, with wood and spice giving structure, and without peat taking the lead.

With the last bottles now remaining, it is the kind of release that invites a slower, more attentive tasting moment. Its rarity is not about noise or spectacle, but about the quiet interest of an aged single cask Highland malt.

About GLENLOCHY

The number of single malt bottlings from this distillery is very scarce. In 1983, the year that so many distilleries finally closed their doors, Glenlochy too had to succumb. The distillery was founded in 1898 and experienced two periods of inactivity in between. Since then, Ben Nevis is the only remaining distillery in the region around Fort William.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Glenlochy 1980 35y Sigrare?

Glenlochy 1980 35y Sigrare is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Glenlochy 1980 35y Sigrare a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Glenlochy 1980 35y Sigrare is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Glenlochy 1980 35y Sigrare a single cask whisky?

Yes, Glenlochy 1980 35y Sigrare is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Glenlochy 1980 35y Sigrare a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, Glenlochy 1980 35y Sigrare is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is Glenlochy 1980 35y Sigrare suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Glenlochy 1980 35y Sigrare is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Glenlochy 1980 35y Sigrare might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Glenlochy 1980 35y Sigrare een goede keuze voor mij?

This Glenlochy 1980 35y Sigrare can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a woody character. Indeed, this woodiness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as this is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Glenlochy 1980 35y Sigrare a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Glenlochy 1980 35y Sigrare whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Glenlochy 1980 35y Sigrare a spicy whisky?

Yes, Glenlochy 1980 35y Sigrare is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Glenlochy 1980 35y Sigrare a fruity whisky?

Yes, Glenlochy 1980 35y Sigrare is a whisky with an intensely fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruits and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Glenlochy 1980 35y Sigrare pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Glenlochy 1980 35y Sigrare whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Glenlochy 1980 35y Sigrare have a high alcohol content?

The alcohol content of this Glenlochy 1980 35y Sigrare is higher than what you would expect from an average whisky expect. While not extremely exceptional, a whisky of around 46% is somewhat rarer anyway. Most whisky is usually closer to 40%.

Is Glenlochy 1980 35y Sigrare an independent bottling?

Glenlochy 1980 35y Sigrare is a whisky of the Glenlochy brand bottled by the independent bottler Signatory. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Glenlochy 1980 35y Sigrare suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Glenlochy 1980 35y Sigrare is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Glenlochy 1980 35y Sigrare vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Glenlochy 1980 35y Sigrare a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Glenlochy 1980 35y Sigrare whisky from Glenlochy is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
