Product info about Deanston 1999 19y Dd

Deanston 1999 19y DD is a Highland single malt with a very focused identity: one distillation year, one cask and a limited number of bottles. Distilled in 1999 and bottled in 2018 after 19 years of maturation, it was released by independent bottler The Nectar as part of The Nectar of the Daily Drams series.

Drawn from a single hogshead and bottled at cask strength, 51%, this is not a whisky shaped for broad uniformity. It is a specific snapshot of Deanston from one individual cask, with only 223 bottles produced. That gives the release a more personal feel than a standard expression, especially for drinkers who enjoy comparing how a distillery can show itself through independent bottlings.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this bottle sits naturally among the more limited Scottish whiskies where provenance matters. The fact that only the last bottles remain adds to the sense that this is a finite release, defined by its cask, its age and its moment in time.

The stated flavour profile points to a Deanston where fruit and spice take the lead. Wood is present in a supporting role, with a lighter floral element adding some nuance.

Peat is only lightly indicated and no salty character is marked. The overall impression is therefore centred on fruit, spice and the direct presence that comes with a cask-strength bottling.

About DEANSTON

Deanston is certainly not the typical, cozy, picturesque distillery you imagine in Scotland. Their building is a former cotton mill that, in its best years, had up to 1,500 employees. It closed in 1965 and that would have been a disaster for the local community, until Brodie Hepburn came up with the idea to convert it into a distillery. A key role in that plan was also played by the river Teith. It not only provides water, but, due to the construction of one of the largest waterwheels in Europe, also supplies the energy needed to run the machines. Even now, hydropower is essential for Deanston Distillery.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Deanston 1999 19y Dd?

Deanston 1999 19y Dd is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Deanston 1999 19y Dd a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Deanston 1999 19y Dd is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Deanston 1999 19y Dd a single cask whisky?

Yes, Deanston 1999 19y Dd is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Deanston 1999 19y Dd a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, Deanston 1999 19y Dd is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is Deanston 1999 19y Dd suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Deanston 1999 19y Dd is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Deanston 1999 19y Dd might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Deanston 1999 19y Dd een goede keuze voor mij?

This Deanston 1999 19y Dd can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a spicy character. Indeed, this spiciness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as it is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Deanston 1999 19y Dd a tarred whisky?

On its own, yes, but Deanston 1999 19y Dd is one whisky in which the smokiness is only very slightly present in the flavour profile. So you will find some peatiness in it, but it is balanced with the rest and does not take over.

Peat is a typical flavour associated with a particular type of whisky. It is a flavour you have to (learn to) love. A whisky like this one, which is only mildly peated, is a great stepping stone to get acquainted with this flavour type.

Is Deanston 1999 19y Dd a spicy whisky?

Yes, Deanston 1999 19y Dd is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Deanston 1999 19y Dd a fruity whisky?

Yes, Deanston 1999 19y Dd is a whisky with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Deanston 1999 19y Dd pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Deanston 1999 19y Dd whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Deanston 1999 19y Dd have a high alcohol content?

Deanston 1999 19y Dd is not whisky for sissies. The alcohol content of this bottle is quite a bit above the 40% you usually whisky expect, so it's best to take into account that this one can come in solid.

Is Deanston 1999 19y Dd an independent bottling?

Deanston 1999 19y Dd is a whisky of the Deanston brand bottled by the independent bottler The Nectar. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Deanston 1999 19y Dd suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Deanston 1999 19y Dd is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Deanston 1999 19y Dd a biological whisky?

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
