Flavour notes

The very old sherry casks make their presence felt in a full but well-balanced way. Raisins bring a deep dried-fruit note, followed by marzipan and sweet honey. A measured touch of wood gives shape and depth without taking over.

There is also a light fruitiness, gentle spice and a subtle floral lift. The overall impression is intense, rounded and notably well composed.

Product info about Valdespino Rare Spirits Malt Whisky

Valdespino Rare Spirits Malt Whisky comes with a background that immediately sets it apart. In 1955, Valdespino, then supplying sherry casks to a Scottish distillery, purchased a small selection of malt whisky to mature further in Jerez de la Frontera. That gives this whisky a direct connection to both malt whisky tradition and Valdespino's sherry heritage.

On average, it spent 12 years maturing in casks that had previously held Palo Cortado and Oloroso. Rather than feeling like a standard release, it carries the imprint of old sherry wood, time and a very specific cellar history in Jerez.

For Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of bottle that adds real character to a specialist whisky selection. With 3000 bottles produced and the final bottles now in circulation, it feels more like a carefully preserved chapter from Valdespino's past than a regular blended malt.

About VALDESPINO

In 1264, the troops of King Alfonso X reconquered the historic city of Jerez from the Moors. The leaders of the troops, consisting of 24 knights including Alfonso Valdespino, were richly rewarded with properties and land. Valdespino also received a vineyard, located on the outskirts of the city, which forms the basis of the current sherry brand Valdespino. Although there is evidence of commercial trade dating back to 1430, the company Valdespino was only officially founded in 1875. In 1882, Valdespino became the official purveyor to the Spanish Crown. In 1999, Valdespino was acquired by the Estevez family, a renowned sherry and brandy producer, under whom the brand has since experienced spectacular growth. In addition to sherry and brandy, Valdespino also markets malt whisky and rum. What sets Valdespino sherry apart?ÈÃþ Valdespino is the only sherry maker that controls the entire process from start to finish: vineyard, vinification, ageing, and bottling.ÈÃþ Valdespino is one of the few that owns vineyards in the legendary Pago Macharnudo: the grand cru of the vineyards in the sherry region.ÈÃþ Valdespino is the only sherry house that produces single vineyard wines: Inocente, Tío Diego, Viejo C.P. and Cardenal.ÈÃþ Valdespino is the only bodega where the fermentation of the wines still takes place in oak barrels; moreover, the ageing period is longer than what is legally required.ÈÃþ Limited Boutique production: every year Valdespino releases very small batches of rare, old sherry on the market.ÈÃþ Valdespino received very high ratings in the renowned Robert Parker rating system, with even a score of 100 points for their Moscatel Toneles!

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Valdespino Rare Spirits Malt Whisky?

Valdespino Rare Spirits Malt Whisky is a blended malt whisky .

Blended malt whisky is a blend of exclusively malt whiskies sourced from different distilleries. The major difference from "regular" blended whisky is that blended malts do not use grain whisky.

Although not common, Compass Box's trendy Blended Malt Whiskies might ring a bell. They do not call themselves "blenders", but "whiskymakers" and they select the best whiskies from the best distilleries for their unique blends.

Is Valdespino Rare Spirits Malt Whisky a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

Yes, Valdespino Rare Spirits Malt Whisky is a no age statement (NAS) whisky. But what exactly does that mean?

According to the rules, when an age is stated on the bottle, it must always be the youngest whisky in the blend and not the age that is the most represented percentage-wise in the blend. A producer will therefore consciously choose not to state an age on his bottle in two cases: when an old whisky is blended with a small proportion of younger whisky, or when young whisky is blended with a proportion of older whisky. In the first case, he does not want to put a young age on his bottle if his blend contains mainly older whisky, and in the second case, from a marketing point of view it is more interesting to go out with that particle of older whisky.

Is Valdespino Rare Spirits Malt Whisky a single cask whisky?

No, Valdespino Rare Spirits Malt Whisky is not a single cask whisky.

Is Valdespino Rare Spirits Malt Whisky a whisky at cask strength?

No, Valdespino Rare Spirits Malt Whisky is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Valdespino Rare Spirits Malt Whisky suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Valdespino Rare Spirits Malt Whisky is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Valdespino Rare Spirits Malt Whisky might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Valdespino Rare Spirits Malt Whisky a tarred whisky?

No, there is no peat in the flavour profile in this Valdespino Rare Spirits Malt Whisky whisky . The absence of any smokiness therefore makes it suitable for those who do not like a peat flavour.

Is Valdespino Rare Spirits Malt Whisky a spicy whisky?

On its own, yes, but this Valdespino Rare Spirits Malt Whisky is one whisky with only a slightly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky is not emphatic in the flavour profile, but it is there.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Valdespino Rare Spirits Malt Whisky a fruity whisky?

On its own, yes, but Valdespino Rare Spirits Malt Whisky is a whisky with only a slightly fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky is hidden in the flavour profile, balanced with the other parts of the profile.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Valdespino Rare Spirits Malt Whisky pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Valdespino Rare Spirits Malt Whisky whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Valdespino Rare Spirits Malt Whisky have a high alcohol content?

The alcohol content of this Valdespino Rare Spirits Malt Whisky is higher than what you would expect from an average whisky expect. While not extremely exceptional, a whisky of around 46% is somewhat rarer anyway. Most whisky is usually closer to 40%.

Is Valdespino Rare Spirits Malt Whisky an independent bottling?

No, Valdespino Rare Spirits Malt Whisky is an official bottling of Valdespino.

Is Valdespino Rare Spirits Malt Whisky suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Valdespino Rare Spirits Malt Whisky is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Spain it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.
