Flavour notes

The supplied flavour profile places fruit and oak at the centre of the whisky. The wood influence is clearly present, yet it is matched by a notable fruity side, giving the impression of an aged Speyside malt where maturity does not completely overshadow the distillate character.

Spice sits in a supporting role, with a light peated accent adding a little extra depth. Floral and salty notes are not presented as defining elements, so the overall impression remains focused on fruit, oak and a restrained smoky edge.

Product info about Balvenie Stories A Day Of Dark Barley 26y

Balvenie Stories A Day Of Dark Barley 26y is a 26 year old Speyside single malt with a more contemplative feel than a standard release. The name places it within Balvenie's Stories line, and A Day Of Dark Barley gives the whisky a clear sense of theme, even before you look at the age statement.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, bottles like this are interesting because they bring together maturity, scarcity and a recognisable distillery identity. The profile points towards fruit and oak as the main elements, supported by gentle spice and a light touch of peat. Bottled at 47.8%, it has enough strength to carry that mature character with presence.

As a collectors item with the last bottles available, this is not the kind of whisky one chooses casually. It suits a considered purchase: a special bottle to open with intention, to give to someone who follows single malt whisky, or to add depth to a carefully chosen collection.

About BALVENIE

Balvenie has experienced significant growth over the past 20 years. In 2002, the single malt from this distillery entered the top 10 best-selling single malts worldwide for the first time. Currently, they occupy sixth place on that list, with annual sales of approximately 4.5 million bottles. Balvenie is a typical Speyside distillery, located in the central town of Dufftown. They produce more than 7 million liters of alcohol each year. Balvenie was also one of the first distilleries to introduce the idea of a finish in another cask to the whisky world in the 1980s, around the same time as Glenmorangie.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Balvenie Stories A Day Of Dark Barley 26y?

Balvenie Stories A Day Of Dark Barley 26y is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Balvenie Stories A Day Of Dark Barley 26y a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Balvenie Stories A Day Of Dark Barley 26y is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Balvenie Stories A Day Of Dark Barley 26y a single cask whisky?

No, Balvenie Stories A Day Of Dark Barley 26y is not a single cask whisky.

Is Balvenie Stories A Day Of Dark Barley 26y a whisky at cask strength?

No, Balvenie Stories A Day Of Dark Barley 26y is not whisky at cask strength.

Is Balvenie Stories A Day Of Dark Barley 26y suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Balvenie Stories A Day Of Dark Barley 26y is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Balvenie Stories A Day Of Dark Barley 26y might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Balvenie Stories A Day Of Dark Barley 26y a whisky to invest in?

Balvenie Stories A Day Of Dark Barley 26y is a whisky of Balvenie that was referred to by us as a Collector'swhisky. That is, we believe they have the most potential to increase in value over time.

Whether that will actually happen we obviously cannot predict. We therefore always advise never to invest or speculate in whisky that you would never want to drink yourself out of.

Is Balvenie Stories A Day Of Dark Barley 26y een goede keuze voor mij?

This Balvenie Stories A Day Of Dark Barley 26y can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a woody character. Indeed, this woodiness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as this is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Balvenie Stories A Day Of Dark Barley 26y a tarred whisky?

On its own, yes, but Balvenie Stories A Day Of Dark Barley 26y is one whisky in which the smokiness is only very slightly present in the flavour profile. So you will find some peatiness in it, but it is balanced with the rest and does not take over.

Peat is a typical flavour associated with a particular type of whisky. It is a flavour you have to (learn to) love. A whisky like this one, which is only mildly peated, is a great stepping stone to get acquainted with this flavour type.

Is Balvenie Stories A Day Of Dark Barley 26y a spicy whisky?

On its own, yes, but this Balvenie Stories A Day Of Dark Barley 26y is one whisky with only a slightly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky is not emphatic in the flavour profile, but it is there.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Balvenie Stories A Day Of Dark Barley 26y a fruity whisky?

Yes, Balvenie Stories A Day Of Dark Barley 26y is a whisky with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Balvenie Stories A Day Of Dark Barley 26y pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Balvenie Stories A Day Of Dark Barley 26y whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Balvenie Stories A Day Of Dark Barley 26y have a high alcohol content?

The alcohol content of this Balvenie Stories A Day Of Dark Barley 26y is higher than what you would expect from an average whisky expect. While not extremely exceptional, a whisky of around 46% is somewhat rarer anyway. Most whisky is usually closer to 40%.

Is Balvenie Stories A Day Of Dark Barley 26y an independent bottling?

No, Balvenie Stories A Day Of Dark Barley 26y is an official bottling of Balvenie.

Is Balvenie Stories A Day Of Dark Barley 26y suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Balvenie Stories A Day Of Dark Barley 26y is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Balvenie Stories A Day Of Dark Barley 26y a biological whisky?

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
