Flavour notes

The flavour profile is built around fruit, spice and a clear mature wood influence. A light floral note sits in the background, joined by a gentle salty edge and a modest peated touch that supports rather than dominates.

At 47.2% and bottled at cask strength, it carries concentration without the supplied information pointing to more specific aromas. The impression is one of long-aged wood, spice, fruit and restrained Highland peat.

Product info about Ardmore 1988 32y

Ardmore 1988 32y is a Highland single malt with time very much at its core. Distilled in April 1988 and bottled in January 2021, it spent 32 years maturing before The Nectar released it as part of the Daily Dram series.

What makes this bottling stand out is its very precise origin. It comes from a single hogshead cask, bottled at cask strength, with just 185 bottles produced. Rather than a broad distillery expression, this is one individual cask captured after long maturation.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see a whisky like this as something for drinkers who enjoy independent bottlings with a clear sense of place and maturation. Mature fruit, wood influence, spice and a gentle peated touch shape the profile, while the small outturn and final bottle availability give it an added sense of rarity.

About ARDMORE

Ardmore is a distillery in the Highlands that is often somewhat forgotten. The whisky produced there has, from the very beginning (1898), been a component of the immensely popular Teacher's blended Scotch, and the popularity as a single malt has recently increased significantly. In the last 10 years, sales have gone up by 300%. Ardmore is also the only distillery in the Highlands that has consistently produced peated whisky from the very start. It is a medium peated whisky with a phenol content of 12-14 ppm, and they mainly use local peat to dry the malt.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of whisky is Ardmore 1988 32y?

Ardmore 1988 32y is a single malt whisky.

The word 'single' causes some confusion for many. A single malt is nothing more and nothing less than a product from a single distillery. So it has nothing to do with a single cask or even casks of the same age.

Single malt whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in the famous copper pot stills, the distinctive copper stills.

Is Ardmore 1988 32y a no age statement whisky (NAS)?

No, Ardmore 1988 32y is not a no age statement (NAS) whisky. The label explicitly states an age and that age represents the youngest whisky found in the bottle (or in the blend).

Is Ardmore 1988 32y a single cask whisky?

Yes, Ardmore 1988 32y is a single cask whisky. That makes this spirit unique of its kind, because because it only came from one cask and was not blended with other casks, only the other bottles from the same cask are exactly the same.

Is Ardmore 1988 32y a whisky at cask strength?

Yes, Ardmore 1988 32y is a whisky cask strength. A cask strength whisky is not diluted with water before bottling, but goes straight from the cask into the bottle and therefore retains the alcohol percentage during/after cask maturation.

One of the advantages of a cask-strength whisky is that, as a drinker, you can decide how strong you like your whisky by diluting or not diluting it with a little water yourself according to your preference, instead of the producer having already done this for you.

Is Ardmore 1988 32y suitable to give as a gift?

Although this Ardmore 1988 32y is not or does not have explicit gift packaging, it can certainly make an excellent gift. Gift packs are usually taken as a safe choice of gift because brands often combine the most accessible or their most popular whisky combine with a fun accessory in a nice gift pack. But if you are looking for a gift for an experienced whisky-drinker they may not be waiting for yet another glass and then this one Ardmore 1988 32y might even be a better choice than such a gift pack.

Is Ardmore 1988 32y een goede keuze voor mij?

This Ardmore 1988 32y can be a whisky that suits you if you like a whisky with a woody character. Indeed, this woodiness is quite emphatic in the flavour profile.

However, we recommend that you also check out the rest of the flavour profile, as this is of course only one part of the overall character of this whisky.

Is Ardmore 1988 32y a tarred whisky?

On its own, yes, but Ardmore 1988 32y is one whisky in which the smokiness is only very slightly present in the flavour profile. So you will find some peatiness in it, but it is balanced with the rest and does not take over.

Peat is a typical flavour associated with a particular type of whisky. It is a flavour you have to (learn to) love. A whisky like this one, which is only mildly peated, is a great stepping stone to get acquainted with this flavour type.

Is Ardmore 1988 32y a spicy whisky?

Yes, Ardmore 1988 32y is a whisky with a fairly spicy flavour profile: the spiciness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

The spiciness of a spirit can come about in different ways.

  • In whisky, the spicy notes mainly arise during the maturation process in wooden casks. The type of wood used (e.g. American oak, European oak) and whether the casks have been used before (e.g. sherry casks) have a big influence on the spiciness of the whisky that comes out of them.
  • With rum, the spicy notes can also come from the barrels used, but in addition there is also a separate class of "Spiced rum" where extra spices are added.
  • Gin has a much shorter production cycle and therefore does not usually get its spiciness from wood. Spicy notes in a gin are usually the direct result of the botanicals used to "colour" the gin and give it its own identity.
Is Ardmore 1988 32y a fruity whisky?

Yes, Ardmore 1988 32y is a whisky with a moderately fruity flavour profile: the fruitiness of this whisky will be discernible right from the first sip from your glass.

  • Whiskies with a fruity character can range from light and fresh apple notes to deep, ripe stone fruit and exotic aromas. This fruitiness can come from the grains, yeast and fermentation used, the shape of the pot stills and the cask type.
  • Rum made from sugar cane or molasses lends itself ideally to fruity notes. From the fresh citrus aromas of a white rum to the deep pineapple and banana notes of an aged variety - fruitiness is an essential characteristic in many rums. Again, the same factors affect fruitiness as with whisky.
Do you drink Ardmore 1988 32y pure or with ice?

Whether you drink this Ardmore 1988 32y whisky best with or without ice is a personal choice. We have always chosen not to take a stance on adding water or ice to whisky. There are certainly good reasons to add a little water to your whisky, but whether it adds value to you or detracts from your enjoyment is something you should mainly discover for yourself.

Does Ardmore 1988 32y have a high alcohol content?

The alcohol content of this Ardmore 1988 32y is higher than what you would expect from an average whisky expect. While not extremely exceptional, a whisky of around 46% is somewhat rarer anyway. Most whisky is usually closer to 40%.

Is Ardmore 1988 32y an independent bottling?

Ardmore 1988 32y is a whisky of the Ardmore brand bottled by the independent bottler The Nectar. That makes this bottle an independent bottling.

Is Ardmore 1988 32y suitable for an Irish Coffee?

To make an Irish Coffee according to the rules of the art, you need an Irish whiskey. Since you are going to mix it with coffee and whipped cream, we recommend using a good, but not overpriced whiskey. This Ardmore 1988 32y is a whiskey, but because this whiskey comes from Scotland it is not the best choice to make a "real" Irish Coffee.

Did you know that the first Irish Coffee was invented in 1942 by bartender Joe Sheridan? He was working at the airport in Foynes, in the west of Ireland. The barman saw some tired passengers and figured they needed coffee with something special. To perk them up, he poured them coffee with a dash of whiskey mixed in and some coffee on top. When asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridon replied, "No, my friend, this is Irish Coffee." And so it was.

Is Ardmore 1988 32y vegan?

According to the data currently available to us, we cannot state with certainty that this product is vegan and this claim is not explicitly made by the brand.

Is Ardmore 1988 32y a biological whisky?

Based on the information available to us, we can conclude that this Ardmore 1988 32y whisky from Ardmore is not an organic product.

How do I get started on Scotch whisky?

Many people assume that a more expensive bottle of Scotch whisky is automatically better. It sounds logical: the higher the price, the better the quality. But in reality, the difference between a bottle of a few tens and one worth thousands of euros is rarely purely in the taste. What you pay has much more to do with age, scarcity, marketing and reputation than with what you actually taste in your glass.

To understand this properly, it helps to look at Scotch in different "levels". Each level tells you something about what you are drinking and, more importantly, what you are paying for, but not every epicurean goes through all these levels.

You can read all about it in our blog post Why an expensive Scotch doesn't necessarily taste better - the different levels of Scotch.
