Flavour notes

Nicolas Catena Zapata 2018 shows a deep purple colour with blue-black tones. The aroma is built around dark fruit: blackberry, black cherry, black plum, cassis and blackcurrant, followed by vanilla, dark chocolate, green olive, eucalyptus, black pepper, tobacco, violets, cedar and Earl Grey tea. Stony, saline and gunpowder-like mineral notes add extra definition.

On the palate it is dry, concentrated and full-bodied, with compact dark fruit, redcurrant, cassis, eucalyptus and black pepper. The tannins are firm yet fine, there is enough freshness to keep the wine lifted, and the finish is long. Decanting before serving is recommended to let the wine open up.

Product info about Nicolas Catena Zapata 2018

Nicolas Catena Zapata 2018 is a dry red wine from Mendoza, Argentina, built around a clear and rather fascinating idea: Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec brought together as an Argentine interpretation of the historic Bordeaux blend. In this 2018 vintage, the blend is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Malbec, giving Malbec a clearly visible role alongside the Cabernet structure.

The vineyard origin adds real depth to the story. The Cabernet Sauvignon comes from Gualtallary, from Adrianna Vineyard at around 1,450 metres, while the Malbec comes from Paraje Altamira, from Nicasia Vineyard at around 1,095 metres. Both sites are in the Uco Valley, and the wine reflects that high-altitude Mendoza setting through its freshness, concentration and firm shape. The grapes are hand-harvested, fermented in a combination of vessels, matured for 18 months in French oak, and bottled unfined and unfiltered.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of bottle we like to present as more than just a famous Argentine name. It is a carefully built cuvée with a strong sense of place and a serious reputation: the 2018 vintage received high international ratings, including scores around 96 and 97 points from several respected wine publications. With the last bottles available, it is especially worth considering for a meal built around grilled beef, particularly ribeye.

About CATENA ZAPATA

Catena Zapata is a winery from Argentina that has its roots in the Mendoza region, at the foot of the Andes mountains. The family business was officially founded in 1902 by the Italian immigrant Nicola Catena and is now led by the third and fourth generation, including Laura Catena, an influential name within the Argentine wine world. Catena Zapata is known for its role in putting the Malbec grape on the international map, for which the Mendoza region has become beloved worldwide. The vineyards are located at various altitudes, up to nearly 1,500 meters above sea level, which contributes to the fresh acidity and expressive style of their wines. The estate experiments with grape varieties such as Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay and is valued for its commitment to quality, innovation, and terroir expression. Catena Zapata is regularly praised by international wine critics and has built a solid reputation with both accessible and high-quality wines for a wide range of wine lovers.
