Kranzelhof Sauvignon Blanc Aries 2019 is a white wine that shows Sauvignon Blanc in a more layered style than the purely stainless-steel, razor-fresh expression. It comes from South Tyrol, Alto Adige, in northern Italy, and the 2019 vintage was identified by Falstaff as Aries Sauvignon Mitterberg IGT.The wine was matured for 12 months, with part of that maturation taking place in barrique. That gives it extra depth while keeping the aromatic Sauvignon Blanc character clearly in view. At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see this as the kind of white wine that works well when someone wants freshness, but also enough structure and presence for food.
Kranzelhof is based in Cermes/Tscherms near Merano/Meran, with vineyards on slopes in the Merano basin. For Aries, the estate refers to Sauvignon Blanc grown at different elevations, on soils with moraine deposits and granite. That background fits the tasting impression of a wine with ripe aromatics, freshness, juiciness and a mineral thread.
Falstaff awarded this exact wine and vintage 90 points in 2022. With only the last bottles remaining, it is an appealing opportunity to discover a mature, aromatic Sauvignon Blanc from Alto Adige.
