Flavour notes
Aromas and flavours move between red cherry, dark cherry, blackcurrant and blue-fruited notes, supported by floral hints and a touch of spice. Underneath, there are more savoury details of leather, slate-like minerality and a light wood or bark note. The palate is dry and medium-bodied, with lively acidity and a juicy feel. The tannins are present but polished, and the finish stays fresh, with a subtle saline-mineral edge.

Product info about Poggio Antico Rosso Di Montalcino 2020
Poggio Antico Rosso di Montalcino 2020 presents Sangiovese from Montalcino in a direct, lively style. The wine comes from Poggio Antico's estate vineyards in Tuscany, planted at around 480 to 520 metres above sea level. It belongs to the Rosso di Montalcino DOC, but the idea is not to imitate Brunello; it is a younger, more immediately expressive reading of the same Montalcino setting. The 2020 growing season was described as regular and well balanced, with rainfall arriving at useful moments and no particularly high summer temperatures. In September, day-to-night temperature differences helped produce healthy, concentrated grapes. In the cellar, the approach was clearly aimed at fruit and freshness: gentle extraction, controlled fermentation and 12 months in 500-litre French oak barrels.
At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of Italian red we like to introduce to customers who enjoy structure, but do not necessarily want a wine that feels heavy or closed. It has the shape and seriousness to work well at the table, with antipasti or pizza, while keeping a juicy and fresh Montalcino character.
Production for this vintage was listed at 20,000 bottles, and with the last bottles now in view, the 2020 has become especially relevant for those looking for this specific Poggio Antico release. Recognition from James Suckling and Jane Anson further underlines that this Rosso di Montalcino stands out within its category.
