Joseph Phelps Insignia 2019 Magnum is a serious Napa Valley red in a 1.5-litre bottle, but its interest goes well beyond format. Insignia is the flagship cuvée of Joseph Phelps Vineyards, assembled each vintage from selected lots grown on the estate's own vineyards.The 2019 blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon, with Petit Verdot and Malbec playing supporting roles. What makes Insignia distinctive is that the composition is not treated as a fixed recipe. Each year, Joseph Phelps builds the wine from the most compelling estate lots available. In 2019, the fruit came from several Napa Valley sites, including Yountville, Rutherford, St. Helena, Stags Leap District and Oak Knoll District. It was also the first Insignia vintage to include fruit from El Venadito in Oak Knoll District.
After 24 months in new French oak, the wine retains the imprint of a vintage described through power, density, freshness and vertical structure. The growing season began with cold, saturated soils and a wet spring, before warmer late-summer conditions and a dry harvest period helped develop flavour and structure in the fruit.
For Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of bottle that gives Napa Valley a strong and precise voice: generous in scale, carefully assembled and built with long ageing in mind.
