Flavour notes

The aroma sits firmly in the dark, ripe Cabernet register: violets, cassis, blackcurrant, blackberry, black cherry and dark plum, with tobacco leaf, dried herbs, cedar and graphite in support. Oak influence appears through vanilla bean, toasted oak and spice notes such as baking spice and allspice.

On the palate, it is concentrated and structured, showing black fruit, plum, cherry, espresso, liquorice and earthy nuances. The tannins are ripe and present, described across the notes as ranging from supple to firm, with enough freshness to balance the depth of fruit. The finish carries a savoury, spiced impression.

Product info about Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 is a Napa Valley Cabernet with a clear sense of place and purpose. This is the Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from Joseph Phelps, not Insignia and not a single-vineyard bottling. The fruit comes from several Napa Valley areas, including St. Helena, South Napa Valley, Oak Knoll District, Stags Leap District and Rutherford, giving the wine a broader expression of the valley rather than the voice of one site alone.

The blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec. Eighteen months in French and American oak add structure and depth, while the available tasting notes do not present the oak as overpowering. The 2019 growing season began cool and wet, then moved into warmer conditions before harvest; Joseph Phelps described the fruit as having well-developed flavour and structure.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of red wine we would place in front of someone looking for Napa Cabernet with concentration, tannic grip and a serious table presence. Dark fruit, spice, tobacco and firm yet ripe tannins make it a natural match for richer dishes, especially lamb such as grilled chops with garlic and rosemary.

The vintage received strong critical recognition, including 94 points from Decanter, James Suckling and Wine Enthusiast. Wine Enthusiast also named it a Cellar Selection, in line with the positive ageing potential noted for this release. As these are our last bottles, the 2019 now carries a little extra sense of scarcity.
