Klein Constantia 2019 is a natural sweet white wine from Constantia in South Africa's Western Cape, made from Muscat de Frontignan. In this 50 cl bottle, Vin de Constance reflects a vintage shaped by cooler, wetter and windier conditions, giving small concentrated berries, fresh acidity and slow, late ripening.The picking process is central to the wine's identity. For 2019, Klein Constantia made 26 separate passes through the vineyard, ranging from grapes with higher acidity to very ripe, raisin-like berries. The components were first handled separately and then brought together later in fermentation to find the right balance between sugar, alcohol and acidity. Fermentation stopped naturally; this is not a fortified wine.
The wine then spent 18 months in 500-litre oak barrels, followed by another 18 months in large wooden foudres before blending and bottling. At Drankenshop Broekmans, we value this release for the way it combines sweetness, freshness and long-term ageing potential without losing its sense of place. Klein Constantia is a historic South African wine producer that traces its origins to the late 17th century at the foot of the Constantia Mountains, just south of Cape Town. The estate is especially known for its location on the old Constantia estates, where in the 18th and 19th centuries the renowned Constantia wines were produced and acclaimed worldwide. After several changes of ownership and a period of decline, Klein Constantia was rebuilt in the 20th century and repositioned as a leading wine estate in the region. The vineyards benefit from a moderate climate, a mix of granite-rich soils and the cooling influence of the nearby Atlantic Ocean, resulting in elegant wines with plenty of freshness.
