Product info about Nicolas Catena Zapata 2019
Nicolás Catena Zapata 2019 is the flagship red cuvée from Catena Zapata in Mendoza. It takes its cue from historic Bordeaux blends, where Malbec once played a more prominent role, and translates that idea through high-altitude vineyards in Argentina's Uco Valley.For the 2019 vintage, the blend is 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Malbec and 28% Cabernet Franc. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc are associated with Adrianna Vineyard in Gualtallary, at around 1,450 metres above sea level, while the Malbec comes from Nicasia Vineyard in Paraje Altamira/La Consulta. The combination of limestone, gravel, large stones, sand and loam gives the wine a firm sense of place rather than a simple varietal profile.
The work behind the bottle is notably detailed: hand harvesting, separate microvinifications by parcel, row and picking moment, fermentation in small oak barrels, concrete and stainless steel, followed by malolactic fermentation and 18 months in French oak. Catena Zapata is a winery from Argentina that has its roots in the Mendoza region, at the foot of the Andes mountains. The family business was officially founded in 1902 by the Italian immigrant Nicola Catena and is now led by the third and fourth generation, including Laura Catena, an influential name within the Argentine wine world.
