Château Les Grands Chênes 2020 is a red Médoc from Bordeaux with a clear left-bank feel: dark fruit, structure and a firm sense of place. The estate is based around Saint-Christoly-Médoc, on the gravel soils known as graves garonnaises, and belongs to the Bordeaux portfolio of Bernard Magrez.The 2020 vintage is made from merlot and cabernet sauvignon, with merlot forming the larger part of the blend. That gives the wine a ripe, fruit-led centre, while cabernet sauvignon brings the Médoc frame of tannin, freshness and ageing potential. The vines are described as having an average age of around 40 years, and the vineyard is listed as HVE certified.
In the cellar, the wine was vinified in small temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, with a fairly long maceration, followed by around 14 months of ageing. The result is a dry red Bordeaux built with more than simple fruit in mind: it has structure, savoury depth and the capacity to develop further in bottle.
