Chateau Alcee 2020 is a red Bordeaux from Castillon on the Right Bank, with a strong connection to its limestone plateau. The estate belongs to Nicolas Thienpont, and the 2020 vintage is made from 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. It has the confident feel of ripe Bordeaux fruit, firm structure and the mineral line associated with the clay-limestone soils around Monbadon and Saint-Philippe-d'Aiguilhe.The vintage was shaped by careful selection. Parcels affected by hail were left out, keeping production limited. The grapes were hand-harvested, fermented as whole berries in concrete vats with pigeage and remontage, then matured for 12 to 16 months in 225-litre barriques and 500-litre barrels.
At Drankenshop Broekmans, this bottle sits well among Bordeaux wines with a clear sense of place: concentrated and ripe, yet also defined by the limestone-like signature often associated with Castillon. With only the last bottles remaining, it is a vintage that is no longer widely available in quantity.
The wine has also received recognition from several critics, including 93 points from James Suckling, 92+ from Jeb Dunnuck and 1 star in Guide Hachette des Vins 2024. More than a list of scores, that support reflects the substance of the wine itself: a carefully made Castillon with depth, structure and ageing potential.
