Mazzei Siepi 2020 in double magnum is a Tuscan red from Castello di Fonterutoli, the Mazzei family estate in Castellina in Chianti. Although it comes from Chianti Classico country, Siepi is released as Toscana IGT because it follows its own identity, rooted in the separate Siepi vineyard, a site connected with the Mazzei family since 1435.The wine's signature is its equal blend of Sangiovese and Merlot. Merlot was planted here in the early 1980s to complement Sangiovese, and from 1992 onward Siepi became a separate wine. In the 2020 vintage, that pairing brings together Merlot's ripeness and roundness with the acidity, tension and savoury spice associated with Sangiovese.
Maturation took place for 18 months in French oak, using barriques for Merlot and tonneaux for Sangiovese, followed by a short finishing period in concrete tanks. The 3-litre double magnum format gives the wine real presence, whether intended for a generous table or for careful cellaring. Castello di Fonterutoli is a well-known wine producer from Tuscany, Italy, with deep roots in the Chianti Classico region. The estate is owned by the Mazzei family, who have been active in viticulture since 1435, making them one of the longest-standing wine families of Italy. Located near the village of Fonterutoli, on a hill between Florence and Siena, the domaine covers about 650 hectares of land, with over 110 hectares planted with vineyards.
