Penfolds Yattarna Chardonnay 2018 is an Australian white wine built around precision rather than weight. Within the Penfolds range, Yattarna, also referred to as Bin 144, represents Chardonnay selected from cooler regions, with a clear focus on finesse, natural acidity and structure.The 2018 vintage brings together fruit from Tasmania, Tumbarumba in New South Wales and Adelaide Hills in South Australia, with Tasmania forming the largest share. That multi-regional approach is central to Yattarna: the aim is not to show one single vineyard, but to compose a cool-climate Chardonnay with tension, depth and definition.
The wine was barrel fermented and matured for eight months in French oak barriques, 60% of them new. The oak influence is described as supportive and integrated, adding texture rather than overt wood character. The vintage also received notable recognition, including 99 points from James Halliday and the titles White Wine of the Year and Chardonnay of the Year at the Halliday Wine Companion Awards 2022.
At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see this as a serious, structured Chardonnay with genuine ageing potential. Penfolds gives a drinking window through to 2033, and young Yattarna can benefit from brief aeration to open up. Only the last bottles of this vintage remain.
