Flavour notes

In the glass, Yalumba Octavius 2018 shows a deep red colour with purple tones. The aromatic profile moves through dark red cherry, red raspberry, black cherry, dark plum, blackberry and blackcurrant, with red liquorice, liquorice, violets, sage and white pepper adding detail.

The French oak maturation appears as mocha, vanilla, roasted chestnut, toast, sandalwood, dark chocolate and coffee. On the palate it is full, concentrated and mouth-filling, carried by fresh acidity and firm yet fine to muscular tannins. The finish is long, with spice and a mineral edge.

Product info about Yalumba Octavius 2018

Yalumba Octavius 2018 is a Barossa Shiraz from Yalumba's Rare & Fine range, made by the historic family-owned producer based in Angaston and founded in 1849. It is a wine with power, certainly, but the story is more precise than that. The 2018 blend draws on fruit from six Barossa vineyards, with Eden Valley playing a major role alongside Barossa Valley. Yalumba describes Eden Valley as bringing aroma and structure, while Barossa Valley contributes richness, density and concentration.

The name Octavius tells part of the story. It refers to Yalumba's small octave barrels of around 100 litres, made by the estate's own cooperage. For the 2018 vintage, the wine matured for 21 months in French oak, partly new and partly older. Oak is clearly woven into the identity of the wine, but it is supported by remarkable old-vine Shiraz material: the average vine age for this release is listed as 111 years, with the oldest component coming from Eden Valley vines planted in 1854.

Yalumba describes 2018 as a season that allowed Shiraz to ripen while retaining freshness. Warm, dry days were balanced by cool nights, helping preserve natural acidity. That gives useful context to the wine's style: full, concentrated and mouth-filling, yet with the freshness needed to hold that depth in place.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, this is the kind of bottle we place in front of someone looking for a serious Australian Shiraz with depth, ageing potential and a clear sense of origin. Yalumba notes that The Octavius can continue developing in bottle for 15 years or more; if opened now, it benefits from generous aeration or double decanting. We are down to the last bottles of this vintage.

About YALUMBA

Yalumba is a winery from Australia with a long tradition that dates back to the 19th century. It was founded in 1849 in the Barossa Valley by Samuel Smith, an English immigrant. Over the years, the company has remained family-owned and is now in the hands of the fifth generation. Yalumba focuses on producing a wide range of wines, and they are especially known for their Viognier, Shiraz, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Sustainability plays a major role within the company; Yalumba has implemented various environmentally friendly initiatives, including vineyard management with attention to biodiversity and energy-efficient production methods. The name Yalumba means all the land around in the local Aboriginal dialect. The wines of this brand range from accessible house wines to special single vineyard editions and premium collections. Thanks to its rich history, its own vine nursery, and the combination of classic and innovative techniques, Yalumba has positioned itself in both the Australian and international wine world as a brand that knows how to combine tradition and innovation, without forgetting its roots.
