Flavour notes

Deep red in colour, with aromas that unfold gradually in the glass. Black olive, raspberry, dried bay leaf, red liquorice, violets, blue flowers and bramble are joined by crushed raspberry leaf and a subtle musky note.

On the palate it is medium-bodied, concentrated without feeling heavy. Plum tart, rhubarb, roasted cherry, green olive, soft spice and a light pastry note add depth and definition. The tannins are firm yet refined and powdery, supported by fresh acidity and a long finish where dark fruit, cassis, tobacco, liquorice, tar and graphite-like notes can also appear.

Product info about Wynns John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon 2020

Wynns John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 is the flagship cuvée of Wynns Coonawarra Estate, from Coonawarra in South Australia. It is built on selection rather than volume: Wynns states that less than one percent of its finest Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are used for this wine, and the John Riddoch label is only produced in years when the fruit reaches the required standard.

The 2020 release comes from three selected Wynns terra rossa vineyards, with vines averaging 29 years of age for this vintage. Good winter and spring rainfall replenished the soils, while cold southerly winds during flowering and fruit set reduced yields. The result is presented as a concentrated Cabernet Sauvignon with structure, yet not a heavy-bodied style.

Maturation took place over 17 months in French barriques and hogsheads, with 23% new oak. The oak plays a supporting role around the Coonawarra Cabernet character, giving the wine shape without taking away from its fruit and savoury detail. The name John Riddoch refers to an important figure in the early development of Coonawarra and to the historic gabled winery associated with Wynns.

At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see this as a serious Australian Cabernet for customers who value origin, ageing potential and a finely built structure. Wynns notes that the 2020 will continue to develop in bottle, and only the last bottles of this vintage remain.

About WYNNS

Wynns is a well-known Australian winery from the Coonawarra region, an area that is recognized worldwide for its characteristic terra rossa soil, particularly suitable for growing quality grapes. The winery was taken over in 1951 by David Wynn, who has since linked his name to the brand. Wynns is especially loved for its red wines, with its flagship being the Cabernet Sauvignon, which, thanks to the limestone-rich soil and cool climate, gains a distinctive style: generally elegant, with plenty of fruit and a subtle balance of acidity and tannins. The range consists of various premium wines made from grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Chardonnay, and includes both approachable and more collectible bottles. The Wynns Coonawarra Estate Winery is located in the heart of Coonawarra and owns some of the oldest vineyards in the region, which is reflected in the depth and structure of their wines. With its consistent quality over the years, Wynns has established a permanent place in the Australian wine world and is also appreciated internationally.
