Château Croix Mouton 2021 Magnum is a red Bordeaux Supérieur from France, bottled here in the generous 1.5 litre format. It comes from Château Croix-Mouton in Lugon, on L'île du Carney on Bordeaux's right bank. The 2021 blend is firmly Merlot-led: 98% Merlot with just 2% Cabernet Sauvignon.The estate describes 2021 as a challenging vintage, and that gives this wine a particular profile. Rather than leaning into sheer ripeness or weight, it places the focus on colour, fruit and a fresh sense of tension. It remains clearly Bordeaux, but in a medium-bodied, fruit-driven register.
The grapes come from the estate's vineyards on clay-loam soils with deep clay layers along the Dordogne and the Fronsadais. After sorting, the fruit is moved into the vats by gravity without crushing, keeping the berries intact. Ageing is deliberately restrained, with a smaller share in barrel and the majority in tank, plus a few months on fine lees. At Drankenshop Broekmans, we like this kind of approach because it lets the fruit and origin speak without pushing the wine too far into oak.
In magnum, it feels made for the table: grilled red or white meat, charcuterie, hard cheeses, quiche and savoury pastry bites all sit naturally beside it. Serve it around 16 to 18 °C.
