Domaine de Chevalier 2021 Rouge is the red Grand Vin of the estate in Léognan, within the Pessac-Léognan appellation. It is a dry red Bordeaux blend and carries the Grand Cru Classé de Graves classification, with cabernet sauvignon at its core and merlot, petit verdot and cabernet franc adding their own detail.The 2021 vintage was far from straightforward. Spring frost, rain in May and June, and mildew pressure in July made careful work essential, while a cool, dry, windy and sunny October helped the red grapes continue their ripening, especially the cabernet sauvignon grown on the estate's gravelly soils. Hand harvesting, several stages of selection and gravity-fed vinification all point to a wine shaped with precision.
Eighteen months of maturation, including a proportion of new oak, support rather than dominate the wine. At Drankenshop Broekmans, we see this as a Pessac-Léognan for those who appreciate Bordeaux with freshness, tannic definition and mineral drive rather than sheer ripeness.
